So cringe-worthy but v.scary!
« on: February 15, 2007, 07:03:55 PM »
Hi all

I feel so embarrassed!  We've only had Troy for a month and he's already visited the vet 3 times.  Admittedly, one visit was just routine but still.
Here's the latest episode:  I left Troy happily in the house on Tues afternoon as I went to the office for my half day. I returned 3 hours later and after fusses, came upstairs to get changed.  I reached the landing and noticed an empty purple wrapper (the feminine hygiene kind!!).  I figured two things, he'd either eaten one or it was  an empty wrapper that had blown from the bath-room.  So we decided to wait and check his "movements".  Anyway, he passed something that he shouldn't have eaten  and then continued happily to play in the fields on our walk, yesterday.
I got him home and he had a few mouthfuls of his dinner and suddenly started freaking out.  Running back and forth, biting his foot, dragging his ears on the floor, shaking his head and scraping at the floor.  If he hadn't eaten what he'd eaten I would of given him a little longer to see if he calmed down but in light of things, I was straight onto the out of hours vet.  We took him in, she checked him over.  Checked his tummy- which was fine.  Checked his ears, also fine.  Checked his foot, clipped the hair off and it was a little bit pink between his toes.  Anyway, the vet believes, Troy was just super itchy and was trying to express that to us.
I was so worried at the time but feel like a bad dog owner for somehow allowing him to get at the "purple wrapper" and possibly over-reacting by taking him to vets, where, by the way, he was completely fine the minute he reached the vets door!

xxxx

PS I told everyone at work it was a sock not a "purple wrapper".

Its a cocker thing, they can be feining death yet get them to the vet and they suddenly become a picture of health.  Muppet is only allowed to be sick between the hours of 9-5 monday to friday.  Out of hours is completely forbidden!  Glad he is ok.

Glen once started yelping really loudly and carrying his paw like it was broken, Even after he quitened down he still carried the paw around just as we were away to whisk him away he saw something out the window, ran no problems at all to see out the window then tried limping back to get attention. He did it agin in the garden at Christmas time no yelping just holding his paw up like he was hurt. My brother was throwing balls for a load of dogs at the time and Glen just wasn't fast enough to get them. Because he was limping along and looking pathetic William handed him a ball. He then underwent a mirraculous recovery and trotted around the garden right as rain showing off his prize.  ::)

If Meg steps on a sharp blade of grass she has hysterics you'd think her foot was being cut off.  It used to really concern me now I just check it for anything really serious and let her get on with it ;)

Glad Troy is ok though.

Max had doggy cramp/pins & needles once after a long, cold, wet walk & we totally over-reacted & panicked & rushed him to the out of hours vet cos he was whimpering & chewing his feet & couldn't settle & was rubbing himself on the floor etc - he was only 6mths old & we'd never seen him like it before.

I did my 'new puppy mum' act & wrapped him in a blanket & cuddled him all the way there in the car while hubby drove & then the minute we reached the vet carpark, he scrambled out of my arms, jumped out of the car & pulled on his lead like a demon to get in there & play with the other puppies!!!!!!!!!!!

Now we adopt a bit more of a 'wait & see for a while' approach before we rush off there (within reason!)
