Dry and scaly area on nose - HELP
« on: April 25, 2007, 03:44:22 AM »
Cookie seems to have a very dry and scaly patch on his nose. It is wet on the front of his nose, but on the side it is very dry. He is otherwise normal, and active.  Is there anything I can do and or is it something serious? Also I've recently moved to a new condominium, the air here is a lot dryer than I used to live in a house. Would it be the cause of his dry nose? This just started recently ever since I moved. I tried to turn on the humidifier hopefully to improve the situation. I can't see any improvment yet so far. The only thing that worried me is the scaly patch on his nose.  :-\

Kali had something like this a few weeks ago.  Im not saying it is the same but her nose was dry, white and scaley on just the sides.  She was treated for mites (using Frontline) although he didn't think it was that, fusiderm in case it was fungal (He didn't think it was that either) and Maxitrol eye drops.  He said it sounded strange but sometimes if the eyes run tears a lot, the nose can be affected.  It did clear up but not sure which one did the trick ph34r  He also told me to put Vaseline Petroleum Jelly on her nose to keep it from drying out.  If in doubt, see the vet

It looks like hyperkeratosis, which just means that the body is producing extra keratin. It's fairly common in older cockers and not really a problem. You can put Vitamin E oil on it or Vaseline, like Sheryl said so it doesn't get too dry.
