Castration

Looking for opinions.  Murphy will be 5 in April, and we are thinking about having him castrated.  He is getting on a bit  :005:, and my MIL's dog got really ill (don't know what it was), and the vet said it could have been prevented if he had been castrated

Can you direct me to any links, or any personal advise would be great!

Alfie was castrated before we got him, but we're having Charlie done on Tuesday. This isn't an easy decision to make, I know there's a lot of pros & cons for this op.

I'm sure there are hundreds of threads on this. Use the search box at the top of the page and you'll find loads of info on it. My personal opinion is in favour of neutering but everyone is different!

shadow is getting done tomorrow he nearly 7 months i woried sick but would be whenever he got done.  I not reading links till after tomorrow and it over. :'(

No advice really, there are so many pros and cons regarding the op that it really is the most personal choice. I made the choice to have Milo done to reduce the risk of cancer as a friend of mines dog developed it when he was about eight. But thats was my choice, there are probably many reasons not to get it done that I do not know.

GailyK81 I'm sure Shadow will be OK, He'll be a little sore but it shouldn't last long. Milo was back to his normal jovial self the very next day and still loves visiting the vets, he's still full of kisses for them so can't have been that bad!!!

 :-\ Kasper is currently under the knife as we speak, I was initially unsure if it is the right thing to do, but as we are having a few behavioural problems and he is never going to be used to breed from, in the long term it was the best thing to do. His behaviourist agreed that although it may not make a difference to his behaviour he wont be as frustrated when the hormones kick in.

My main concern was the change in his coat as I like him the way he is, now I am clock watching roll on 12 o clock so I can ring and find out how he is.

We got Woofie when he was 4 and he was still entire.  We weighed up the health risks and decided although we would definitely have Maddie done we thought the risks of surgery outweighed the benefits of castration.

However Christmas 2006 Woofie started bleeding from his willy, he had got an enlarged prostate and prostetic hyperplasia (sp) which I guess he wouldn't have got if he had been castrated earlier.  Being castrated has prevented any further problems so far. He recovered very quickly from the op.

Well shadow had his op yesterday and he was a bit funny yesterday when we brought him home he was absolutely fine but was hungry and we did not want to overfeed him incase he was sick from anestetic and he just walked round the room crying he must have felt a little worse the wear. He slept last night fine and has woke up this morning just his usual self, he is confused as to the fact he is on his lead even in the garden(advised by Vet) and he tries to lick the wound which vet said to avaoid (how)? but we are distrcting him because he would be more than upset with one of those collar things I sure. Any how all went well he seems ok and all that worry making me and OH sick what we like. Good luck to all the little fellas today and this week from Gail & Shadow

Charlie had his op yesterday we didn't have a very good night, :'( he's got to wear a collar, but he can still reach the wound. He seems a little bit brighter this morning, he's been outside this morning to use the the toilet :blink: we've got to take him back tomorrow to check the stitches then next week to have them removed. Hope everyone else's little ones are doing well......

Ahh hope everyone is ok Shadows stitches are inside and he has not even bothered after the first day. He is back to normal, vets to check him tomorrow (4 days after op) I hope they say we can let him off lead as this is causing him the most frustation.  How is everyone else doing?

Krumbles stitches were inside too and I let him off three days after and he was fine. Naughty me. Think its easier to heal if they are inside and dissolvable though...

Hamish has to have his stitches removed in 10 days time.

He is more lively tonight than I thought he would be, and is not minding the lead too much at the moment, but he does not like his big plastic neck collar

Ate his tea with no problems and did the toilet so things are looking good

Alfie got off lead the day after his op  ph34r  He only had one stitch and came bounding out the vets like nothing had happened to him.
