recovery after being spayed?
« on: February 12, 2008, 10:10:14 AM »
We have Daisy booked in to be spayed at the begining of March when she will be six months old , but my DH    >:D  has booked a holiday for 12 days after her op   .The vets have said she will bounce straight back within a couple of days and when we go away we are hoping my Dad will have her so she will be well looked after but even so I think this is far too soon after her op.Will she still have stitches and a cone head at 12 days after? .If I postpone the op can they do it in April at 7 months or am I then getting too close to her possibly having a season? Wish my selfish OH did not place me in this dilema , but that's a whole seperate rant

Hi Ameliexx, dont worry about Daisy, she will be fine and fully recovered in time for your hols. We got Rosie our 8yr old blue roan rescue last spring, she wasnt spayed and I absolutely dreaded having it done as I thought she was quite old for such an operation. We had only ever had little boy dogs! The vet convinced me it was best for her to have it done,so in she went. When I collected her later in the day she was walked out to meet me, I was quite surprised I imagined her being wrapped in blankets and carried out!! She was very sleepy due to the morphine until the next morning then completely back to normal. I couldnt believe it, especially at her age. They are much stronger than we imagine. She also didnt need the dreated cone collar contraption on!! Daisy will have forgotten all about it by the time you are on holiday, and she will have a ball at her grandads, a new woman!! Dont put it off you will just worry about it more :D Iam a real softie with the dogs too and do sympathise with you. Hope everything goes well for you and Daisy, do post and let everyone know.

I just typed a similar reply to "ehenry" but it dissapeared into Cyber space  :005:

Poppy was the same back to normal the next day!  She stayed with my parents while she had the stitches for a night and everything was fine.  No cone and she left the stichs alone as well (good girl ).  A week later stiches out and who would know except for bald tummy!

Lola was spayed yesterday.  I wouldn't say she is 100% yet  (I'm sitting at the computer so she will rest and therefore she keeps nodding off!!) as soon as I move she's up and about with me though.

And I don't want to be doom and gloom.......BUT she is wearing the beloved cone as she will not leave the stitches alone!

I'm sure by day 12 she will be right as nine-pence.  So you should be okay.

My girl got spayed at 7 years of age after having a bout of pyometria (the ocult type, which means there is no discharge), hers was in fact an emergency op, as she had been off her food for a couple of days with a high temperature, high white cell blood count and was peeing more often than usual, so she had to go straight in, she came home midday, was groggy, sad and in her basket all day, but by night time I was told I could offer her a couple bits of chicken, and she nearly took my fingers off wolfing them down, thats when I knew she would be fine. The vet had warned us that she might take a bit longer to get back to normal as she had been weakened by the infection. He showed us her uterus and it weighed 4 times more than the normal weight and was all swollen full of pus. By next day she was up and mobile, wore the cone for 2 days and as we could see she wasn't bothered about the stitches, we took it off, 10 days later the stiches came out.

Ellie trotted out of the vets quite happily after she had been spayed, 3 hours sooner than they originally said we could collect her, then worried the life out of me by jumping onto the bed 2 days later (with no ill effects thankfully).  The only problem we had is that she got quite depressed not being able to go for a proper walk.
