cats normally spray dogs mark.  Mine doesn't pee on things in the house but on his walks does like to mark everything in sight which can be annoying if he's supposed to be working >:( :005:

I think Jimmy started marking as soon as he could cock his leg - it's his main passtime on walks and it keeps him out of trouble. :lol2: He's never marked in the home though but I would have to watch him in places such as PAH where other dogs have been and left their own mark. I'd leave your dog to it when offlead but try and discourage him from doing it when onlead - otherwise you could find he ends up pulling you to every tree and lampost... that's one mistake I made early on with Jimmy.

Yep, it's just a normal wee - although not necessarily quick, they can spend ages trying to decide the best spot to do it.  :lol2: It's a kind of 'Kilroy Was Here' type of thing, or grafitti tagging - leaving messages for other dogs. Someone on here once described it as sending and checking peemails - which is about right.  :lol2: They'll do it over other dogs scent, often trying to cock their leg as high as possible ( a macho thing perhaps to make them seem taller than they are ) and keep doing it on a walk even when there's very little left to squirt out.  I don't think it's that common really for dogs to do it in their own home though, mostly just outdoors on top of where other boys have been, or in prominent places where another dog will get wind of it.

that sums it up nicely  :005:

Jarv does incredibly high yoga positions to elevate his height  ::)

he has never marked in our house, and only once in PAH where another dog has obviously done it before him... ph34r

at the end of walk it's about 3 drops a time, and as Tasha says it can be very annoying when working (or trying to train... :shades: )

Molo's never marked in the house - he did once mark my mums houseplants in their conservatory, though  :005:  However, there are some places that he really is a menace - this afternoon he marked four different places in the treatment room of the chiropractor  ::)    It tends to be where other dogs have marked - so pet stores, kennels etc  :lol2:

We had a canine male house guest a few weeks ago for an hour or so - and he marked his way around our living room  ::)

Ruby marks when shes out and about as well, she'll sort of balance so she's cocking one of her legs, then Wilf takes his turn to mark the same spot

Some will do it in others though --- I find it with the unneutered male fosters. Mind you one didn't cock his leg even though he was about 2 years old but would always squat (one day he did both my dogs' beds and then jumped on the sofa to make his point ::))

Neither of my boys have ever marked in the house but they do it constantly when out, they always pee over Tilly's pee and have competitions with each other to see who can mark over the other one as well. Alfie is particularly obsessive and on more than one occasion has stopped for a quickie when he's on his way back to me with a retrieve  ::)  so yes it is annoying when they are supposed to be working! He was really bad when we went to all the game fairs last summer because there were dogs everywhere, I swear he peed on every post, sign, rail, fence, tent, car tyre and pole he could find. His pieceS de resistance were trying to pee on a rack of expensive wax jackets (I hustled him on just in time), peeing into a bucket which was left out for dogs to drink from and peeing on a toilet which was sitting outside a stand which was selling handmade decorative toilet seats, I pulled him on as quickly as I could and it was only a few drops but the woman running the stall tut-tutted at us so I had to say to her 'well if you will leave a toilet sitting out there they're gonna use it' as I legged it into the crowd  :005:
