Puppy colour?
« on: May 13, 2008, 11:58:18 PM »

Hi there,
We are new to your website and have got a lot of information, I look forward to getting to know everyone in the future as I am sure I will be a regular visitor to this site. I have become addicted already and we have a wee bit until we get our Bailey home!

I hope someone can help us - We are getting our first cocker in 5 weeks time and we have been to see him and picked the one we fell in love with but we have no idea what colour he could end up!! I have read through a lot of posts trying to figure out how their colouring changes and haven't read any where the puppy is mostly white.
We have named our new family member Bailey and I have attached a photo we took at the breeders, he is nearly 4 weeks old here and he has some black markings on his ears. The other photo is of all 5 pups so you can see the mix of colours.
Mum is a black solid and dad is a lemon roan. We are so excited about him coming home and really don't care what colour Bailey ends up, we just wondered if anybody had any ideas?
Thanks for listening (reading).
Karen

From the little black spot on his ear and his pink paw pads it looks like he'll turn out as either a black and white or a black and white ticked. I've never seen one with so few black markings though. I'm assuming he's a working cocker from his sire being a lemon roan?

Id have him checked out for deafness as well as sometimes a mostly all white cocker can be deaf.
Ive seen a white pup at 5 weeks turn to a pale lemon and white with the only lemon being on the ears and a bit over the eyes,  and one teeny dot on the tail. that dog was fine no deafness, ( it was checked before homing )
 from this..

 to this..

your pup may develop ticks of black in his coat as he matures.
this is the same pup grown up a few months more.... more colour appeared on her ears but not on body,

Hello

My view is that these are a litter of working type cockers. Have a look at this link http://www.cockersonline.co.uk/discuss/index.php?topic=40635.0 and think it through as I'd rather you found out before you got the pup home if this isn't the type you were looking for. There is alot of white on the puppy and you could risk it being deaf and this wouldn't be good  :-\.

If they are show type it isn't normal practise to cross solids with parti colours....

Im sure they will be working type or have worker in them, I assume karen has seen the parents or at least the mother.
Perhaps it was a working type she was looking for.

C'mon guys, karen is excited as she should be about her new pup..

The dam is a black worker with a superb temperament, the sire is my lemon roan stud dog Gilbey.

The litter has been lovingly reared with no expense spared by a lovely family who want to do everything right and are open to advice even though this is not their first litter, and a lot of thought went into it.

The litter credentials are both parents with good temperaments, both laid back, a very well reared litter and the proud new owners can be assured their pup will never develop gpra(Gilbey Optigen clear). That is more than can be said for many many litters that are born.

As most of you know, I like the lighter colours - most of my own breeding is white with black ticking or lemon roan/lemon and white - I have never had a deaf pup. Im not saying it cant happen but very very unlikely. I cant remember if I ever posted Lucy's pups pics up - probably not in case it contravened board rules, but that was lemon roan to lemon roan - the pups were very light lemon and whites with dark eyes, and deaf?? you must be joking-they could hear a pin drop!!

I think the pup would best be described as lemon pied - this is a colour name I had to use a few years ago when i bred a white dog with black ears with a few black ticks, and a few patches of lemon on his left side. There was no other way to describe him to register him as he was not a tri colour in the classic sense.

I love the term lemon pied, and I would love your puppy  :luv: :luv: :luv:  Congratulations Karen, I know what the sire looks like and he is just GORJUSS and I am very very jealous.

Kirsten, is eye colour hereditary too?  If so, there is a strong likelihood of dark eyes given the dams colouring I guess.

Ahhh the Linlithgow litter! You'd think I'd recognise a Gilbey puppy at 20 paces by now  :lol2: :lol2:

Awwww what a sweet pup  :luv:

Karen - Do you think you'll eventually work Bailey? or is he just going to be a family pet? I imagine a cocker of his colouring would cause quite a stir on a shoot because it's so unusual. I think I'll have to get in the queue for a pied pup one day, they're stunning  :-*

Jean - that's a beautiful little chap you've got there, very handsome head  :-*

Kirsten- the Whaupley kennels have started Optigen testing, so the word is getting out, maybe the tide is on the turn  :D

Best wishes,

Mary

Hiya,

Thank you all so much for your replies :)
We are so excited about Bailey coming home and I can't believe that his dad's owner is here!!

They are being raised in a lovely home, nicer people we have not met in a long time!
Bailey is going to be a family pet, a much loved one:)
We know they were working cockers and don't mind a bit as we were not looking for a particular breed of cocker, and Bailey stole our hearts.
I will be looking for lots of tips and hints and will post on the puppy board too.

Here is a couple of close up piccies of Bailey.

Thanks again everyone:)
Karen

lovely puppy karen, I get a wee bit ticked off about everyone "assuming" folk are looking for show type cockers, hence my earlier reply.  If your pup is anything like my lot he will be a perfect pet. Some breeders do breed workers that arent as "full on " as some. And kirsten is one of them.
If you met my Liath you would not believe how quiet and naturally obedient she is, and has been from birth. She could sit and do a short stay at 4 months. :o :o Honestly! I have witnesses!

Mary thats not my lemon and white pup but hes one Rolos breeder had. I just thought karen would like to see pics of how a pure white pup at 3 weeks can change.. :luv:
