Grass seeds in paws - a note for new members
« on: July 12, 2008, 10:16:30 AM »
I thought I'd post a thread about checking paws for grass seeds, for our newer members.

I trim the hair between Bramble and Poppy's toes and check between their toes after every walk. That way, seeds don't have a chance to bury into their skin, causing much pain and distress.

Over the past few weeks, I have pulled at least one grass seed out after every walk. The one I got on Poppy last night was a horrible hard one that would have managed to pierce her skin very easily, had it not been removed.

With grass seeds, prevention is much easier than cure. Please take a few minutes at the end of your walk to check for these horrible things and keep your dogs pain free this summer.
With love from Julie, Bramble Poppy and Coco xxx

I have never found one on Billy yet. What do they feel like? Are they easy to feel?

When you place your hands on the coat you can feel a small 'bobble'.  They're not big at all, probably a tad bigger than a peppercorn, so can be easily missed  ph34r>:D  Henry gets them more than Katie, probably because he has longer hair than her, and he gets them in his ears (outside, not inside thankfully) and in his armpits mainly.

I thoroughly recommend what Jools has said - better to prevent them causing damage by spending a few minutes going over their coat, than having a baby in pain  :'( :'(

Good post Jools  ;) ;)
Mummy loves her angels - but they're not angels all the time - They love to chew and charge about - but mummy doesn't mind

Jan, they tend to be wee and dart shaped - like a tiny seed of corn. have a look at the grass seed sticky at the top of the health section - there are photos on there.

I spread B and P's toes and chack in between. They would bea easy to see in Billy's feet because of his black fur.

We have been checking our dogs too  :-\

Grass seeds are horrid  >:D  last year Bracken had a smelly sore foot, he had started chewing the fur away it was a seed stuck in, managed to remove, soaked his paw in dilute dettol put some savlon on, popped bandage on for a few days to stop him getting at it, he was fine then

Always really careful now
