Different colours, different temperaments??

Hi there
Interesting to read all this...we got our Jessie from a cocker breeder, had to wait until a litter was born and couldnt have the pick of the litter as they were keeping one to show!! Told they were eye and hip tested. We were soo pleased that we had found our puppy!!
When we collected her we were given a freshly bathed sweet smelling and wormed puppy but she was in a crate with an adult different breed dog...away from the litter. We were first to take her from the breeder at 7 weeks. She was booked in at the vets the following day for a check up but she had a VERY ROUND tummy and we were given raw chicken and mince to feed her on...as thats what she had weened them onto. We tried to give her a pice of chicken that night but she coldnt even lift it, never mind about eat it...we chopped and made it smaller but she wouldnt eat it. At the vets we were told she was riddled with worms and didnt appear to have been wormed in ages and also had a bad case of ear mites and fleas!!! She couldnt have her 1st jabs as she was in such a bad way. She was also underweight and under nourished and the vet advised us to use a complete puppy food.
The point to this story is...that even trying to do the right thing when buying a puppy we still ended up having issues. Despite her bad start she has developed into a beautiful orange roan cocker and we are soooo glad we 'rescued' her early rather than waiting until she was 10/12 weeks.
Cheers

Jane, if you bought your pup from a member of the Cocker Spaniel Club (most show breeders are members of this Club), then you most certainly could have complained to the Club as selling pups before 8 weeks of age is against all Breed Club Codes of Ethics. Telling buyers the parents are eye-tested & hipscored when they are not is also not on :( If no-one complains about breeders like this, they are free to carry on regardless sadly :( If the breeder is listed on this site or others, you should definitely complain to one of us Admins or the site concerned.

my cocker spaniel bitch was baught at eight months old fom an advertisment in the paper, when we got there well youve never seen ,anything like it the house was runing wild with dogs cats and must been at least 10 kids, the garden was full of birds and rabbits and ferrets, :? the house was absolutly filthy aggy and kim wouldnt have  8touched it, :o it was that bad,the dog wasnt there when we got there it was being walked by another two of the children,it was braught back with a washing line used ae a collar and a lead, the dog jumped straight up on me and snuggled under my neck, :D the woman shouted at the dog to get down, the fear on the dog was terible, at that point we said why was she getting rid of the dog,her reply was "i cant stand the sight o f the dog" we then gave her the money what she was asking and made a quick exit.it was clear to us that the dog had been badly beaten due to how nerves she was. :( when we got her home we fed her then decided to bath her.you have never seen so many fleas and ticks on a dog,it took two hours to remove them fom her coat,i could have cried for her :( .then we examined her teeth and they were in very bad condition for her age.we took her to the vets the following day,he examined her and told us that we probaly saved her life, she was very pale. :x anyway here comes the good part we have had her eight months now and she is a completly different dog, :D she is fantastic with my three children as well as other peoples children, with love and plenty of attention she is a completly different dog now,and fianally she is going to be a muumy very soon,so my story has a very happy ending,it has shown me that cocker spaniels are very trusting and forgiving. :)

 How awful for the poor dog, sounds like she certainly had a lucky escape!

One thing that does concern me though, is it not too soon for this girl to be having a litter :?:   She has had a really tough time of it by all accounts, IMO I don't think it would be fair to the poor girl, to be having puppies, so soon after such an awful ordeal    She may not be physically strong enough or mentally for that matter :( , sorry if this upsets you, but why after everything shes been through, would you want to have a litter from her so soon :?:

WHY :?  :?:  I can't understand this, it really saddens me :(

I share Emma's concerns too :( From your post it would seem your Cocker girl is only 16 months old & having taken her from a bad environment & given her a loving home, it does seem strange that you have rushed into breeding from her at such a young age, unless of course it was an accident? Unfortunately I now know it was not an accident as I have just remembered your posts under another Username :(

I agree   why oh why put this poor dog through an early pregnancy when she seems like she has had a hellish life already??? How long have you had her  :?: and in my honest opionion if you think she has grown 4 more teats whilst pregnant ( in one of your previous posts), you have not done any research and shouldn't even be breeding in the first place    sorry to seem so harsh  :(

This is exactly right whinneygirl and it is now up to you as her new owner to ensure that your poor girl who had such an awful start in her life is now safe and protected from anymore suffering, I think that after just 8 months in your care your cocker (is her name Whinney?) will have only just settled in and you seem to have done a good job of that as you say you have gained her trust, although sadly you repaid that trust with having her mated so soon.

I am not a breeder, have never had a litter, will never breed, I will leave that to those who KNOW what they are doing   but whinneygirl I do know enough to know that to breed your poor girl so soon after what she went through is wrong, and there is no point in my saying anything else on the subject as the deed has already been done :(  the fact is that you now have to ensure a safe and healthy pregnancy and by coming here and asking advice from those that do KNOW what they are doing is a good thing IMO, you will need to do now what you should have done before this mating and read as much info as you can possibly digest and asking plenty of questions which the members on this board will be more than happy to answer in order to help this poor girl through her pregnancy.

Good luck with it all whinneygirl  :)

All I might add is that you consider in great depth that when your young dog has had her pups ( and they have gone to responsible forever homes)that you PLEASE get her spayed, it's only right and the least you can do for her :(

Maybe this story has gone full circle then - back to the breeders issue.  If you get a dog from a registered breeder (as we are doing so with our new arrival) then you can always turn there for advice on care and if you wish to, breeding.

I met our breeder at Crufts this year - and we went through a very thorough vetting procedure before she agreed to sell us one of a forthcoming litter.  We drove to her house some 1.5 hours away before we even knew she had a litter on the way because we wanted to learn more about the breed and talk to her about our decision-making.  We were aware of puppyfarms and I knew that I wanted a puppy from a reputable home where I could trust the information I was given.

I know that once I have bought Woody home, she will be on the end of the phone so I can call her for advice.  And of course we'll be going back to visit with Woody so she can see him for herself.

I'm thrilled that I have made a new friend in our breeder and definitely want to keep in touch through Woody's life.
