Do golden cockers......
« on: May 30, 2004, 06:26:01 PM »
...have different types of coat to other cockers :?:   Sammy has a short coat, and today while at training class there was a 13 week blue roan who has a lovely curly coat, the really long ears and largish snout, yet Sammy's coat is short and has a flatish head. It's got me worrying as I have that horror story in my head about that lady on that programme in the week whose cocker was a collie mix :( , I know I sound like I'm overreacting, but everything seems to point to Sammy as not being a 100% Golden cocker. Today I asked a few of them at the training class and the guy who runs it has 2 springers, who are huge by the way, and he doesn't seem to think he's a mix, he said his coat will come later, another said it could be his 'summer' coat, please put my mind at rest, Jane if you are there....HELP!!!!

Cocker coats can look and feel different depending on the colour. All the solids I see seem to have a finer shinier coat than my two and always seem to gleam more. But even among the blue roans there can be differences. A friend's blue roan always had a finer coat than Ruby's. Ruby's has also been curlier than my friend's blue as well.

Looking at your avatar Sammy looks 100% cocker to me, he is lovely :D

I am no expert but every cocker I have seen has a different level of coat depending on sex, age and time of year. Our Billy has always had lots of coat everywhere but on his belly and ribs.

Thanx topaz billy for those words of encouragment. Sammy hasn't any fur on his tummy either,  his coat has no curls at all, but he's so shiny and soft and so so cuddly :!:   :)

Hi Subeeloo

This has been mentioned on another thread somewhere, can't find it just now, but from memory :?  a golds coat tends to be much thinner than a blue roan, making it easier to groom etc    With regard to solid blacks, I may be wrong here, but I think their coats generally tend to be very full and thicker than all the other colours :?  :?:   Sammy is gorgeous, I don't think you have anything to worry about, looks all cocker to me :D   Enjoy him

We had the same worries about Fudge. She's got a thin coat, very flat and when she was a pup had precious little by the way of feathering. We consider it a blessing now- especially seeing as ahe's been on the beach all day and is full of sand!!!!
It means she rarely needs to go for a strip and she doesn't get bits of forests stuck in her belly hair. It's a good thing!

yes alot of golds do tend to have finer coats , sometimes it takes along time for the feathering to grow long  . my bella dosent have much belly fur but plently everywhere else so it all depends on the dog   just stick in there im sure it will grow just have a peek in rouges gallery you will see lots of different cockers :) it will show you just how much difference there is in each cocker :)

Oh a finer coat would be great   .  I've just finished bathing and brushing Morgan, whose coat is so unruly.  His tummy feathering reaches the floor when it's wet   .  There are gold cockers which have non-trim coats.  It was Colin who mentioned it to me as I always wondered how Jimmy had such a flat, silky coat.  Morgan's coat is lovely for about 3 seconds when he's brushed, but just one shake and he looks like he's been dragged through a hedge backwards
He did take quite a while to get the feathering though.  Whereas Cooper (blue roan) is a wooly mammoth now, at 5 months

Toby (he's golden too) doesn't have much coat. Not sure if this is down to colour though as the golden cocker owned by the owners of the local pub has a very long and wild coat.

As the others have said goldens generally have finer coats. A lot also depends on the lines your cocker has come from. My solids are all well coated including my Golden, something that line is known for. Great for a show cocker but I would think yourself lucky if you don't show as the coat will be a lot easier to look after :D

Hi! Odie is a golden cocker (heh, he's shaved in the picture so don't pay attention to that) and his coat is also short and shiny and straight for the most part! I think it just depends on the cocker, and I wouldn't change  Odie for anything, even if he did turn out to be a collie mix!

Goodness...i was thinking the same thing as you after being at the beach and seeing quite a few cockers and there coats were nothing like Jarvis's who is really really fluffy and thick. A lady pointed out that she had never seen a coat like it and im thinking :?  Anyway i reckon no matter the coat he's my beautiful fur ball.

Your pup is gorgeous
