do supplements work
« on: April 11, 2009, 07:23:28 PM »

I know theres not many of us around...looks like all the lucky ones have gone away  ::) so will have to wait for replies for all the many things I'm posting about at the moment.....but heres another one :-\

Do supplements work and how long do they normally take  :-\ Lola has been on them since about the 10th Feb and to be honest i haven't seen alot of improvement  :-\ she still has a click in her back end...and since she has been allowed back offlead for 5 Min's she is very unsettled again at night..laying down then shooting up as though she has had an electric shock, she will do that numerous times..pacing and she has taken to whining/crying for no reason that i can see...her back leg is still pulling up even with a short run  and i know supplements will not cure what she has i thought they would ease some of the symptoms  :-\
....Or is it because it is only mild that im not going to see a vast improvement the same way you would with a dog that has severe symptoms  :-\

I don't know about in dogs, but in humans I would certainly expect to see an improvement within a few days of taking supplements....

What is she taking?? I think some supplements seem to suit some better than others - I know loads of people get really good results from Glucosamine, but it doesn't seem to do much for me...  :-\ When I was younger I took Cod Liver Oil for a bit, and that did seem to help...

Hope you see some improvements soon...  :-\

I would have thought you would have seen some improvement by now but they do take a while.
When you see them every day the improvement is not so noticeable

I think the only way to measure the difference is to stop the supplements and see what she's like after a few days  :-\

If you're not seeing a difference you're not using the right ones  ;) Knee problems are more of a problem with the ligaments, so for that I prefer MSM (1000mg) and Vit. E (500mg) twice a day  :shades:

To answer your other question, usually results with supplements become apparent in about a month, unfolding gradually, but it's not unusual to see results within a week or two

That's what I would do as well.  I would have thought you'd hav noticed a difference by now though :shades:

Thanks for the replies  ;)
She is on at the minute...

EPO.....500mg
ester-c..500mg
green lipped mussel...250mg
syn-flex...which has Glucosamine and Chondroitin in it......recommended dose for her weight
salmon oil..5ml
...these are all split over her meals and i have just started to give devils claw regular...was when and if needed

All of these were either recommended by the vet or from people who have got dogs with HD and from Col members

She has seemed a bit better over the last 2 nights (since giving her devils claw)  :-\ or it could be that she hasn't ran for 5 weeks so her muscles might need to readjust to being used again for running
