Roan Character
« on: April 21, 2009, 01:35:58 PM »
I've known a few blue roan cockers but other than at Crufts, have not met any orange. I read something on here a few days ago that suggested that O/W may be more hyper than the blues. Also, when chatting to an O/W owner at Crufts, she told me that they tend to be a bit 'enthusiastic'. So my question is, with a little red fire-ball at home would I be better with a blue roan rather than an O/W?

If Mrs Mac is reading and she would like to donate Melody, I'd be delighted to adopt her  :D

I’m not sure it matters what colour the dog is?  I think it depends more on the individual - his breeding/upbringing… in saying that I can remember being told that liver roans were either timid or loopy - and Brodie’s both :lol2:

I got told that lemon roans are likely to be nasty as they are badly bred and more likely to have rage  I must point out that it isnt a statement i agree with , and not why i choose a blue roan , you find alot of people that have varied opinions on cockers and the temprement because of there colour . I am a firm believer that a dogs temprement usually reflects how the owner has brought the dog up.

I have a blue roan and he is loopy  :lol2:

Every dog's temperament is a result of a combination of many different things (eg the temperament of the parents and other ancestors, socialisation & training, diet etc) but colour really isn't one of them. There may well be some oranges who are hyper (just as there are some hyper blues, livers and any other colour you care to mention :005:), but there will be just as many who are not. We have 3 orange & whites - all are happy souls but not in the least bit hyper :D

Here are a couple of previous threads where we've discussed colour and temperament/intelligence etc:

All my orange girls are lovely and calm, unlike Poppy my blue and she's a complete headless chicken, but Bella my other blue roan is lovely and calm, so like Jane said, you can't judge them by colour, temperaments of parents/grandparents etc play a big part in it, so does socialisation

William is orange roan and so laid back he's practically horizontal  :luv:. He gets his looks and temperament from his lovely dad Sunny, another orange roan.

William's blue roan brother and blue roan sister are also like their dad. Their orange roan sister (as a puppy, I haven't seen her since) was much more like their blue roan mum, very busy and quite excitable.

I'm sure the temperament of the parents plays a big part in what their offspring are like, as well as upbringing etc.

Parker is a blue roan and I have never known a dog who likes to sleep more than him!  He lives in an entirely different world to the rest of us, and I will never know what goes on in his head during the (short) hours he is awake ::)

My experience of blue roans is zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz :005:

Dylan is a chocolate rowan is also a laid back character. He plods along on a walk not keen on other dogs specially bouncy ones. Quite content to do his own thing. Or carry his ball on a walk. He is such a lovable boy, who loves people.

Well Honey is Orange Roan and a worker... (she gets her colour from her show quarter!!).  And I don't think she is particularly manic - yes, she'll keep going for as long as you do, and needs a certain level of stimulation (as most workers do), but she's quite happy to chill out in a sunbeam or curl up on the sofa when we're relaxing....  ;)

As others have said, it's really down to the temperament of the parents (and possibly the way you raise them, to a degree) rather than colour...  ;)
