whats good to stop runs?
« on: June 15, 2009, 07:24:56 PM »
Hi,

Our cocker spaniel pup(kianne) is on royal canin junior mini dry food & also mince. The breeder also gave her tripe so we have bought some tripe mince from pets at home. She had this on Saturday evening & it seems that she has had a touch of the runs from sunday afternoon onwards. She is still lively and drinking well.
What should we do?
Do we stop giving her tripe?
Should we give her just dry food?
Any advice welcome.

Mike

I would either feed her boiled chicken breast/rice or white fish/rice over the next 2 - 3 days.  Hopefully this will help her tum settle.  As you said she is drinking water, so it just sounds like the tripe hasn't 'agreed' with her.

Scrambled egg & rice is also good.

Hope her tummy settles down soon :D

Yes, chicken or fish and rice are the best to firm things up.  As she is so young I wouldn't let it go on longer than 24 hours without talking to the vet though - they can dehydrate very quickly when they are so small  :-\

So agree with Joules  she is such a tiny baby
We always use white fish and rice is small amounts but as she is so small don't leave it to long they go down hill so quickly
Hope she is better soon let us know how she is  :luv:

Slippery elm mixed with her food will bind her up and soothe her stomach.

Someone once reccomended a weetabix to bind them up. I haven't heard this one before, is it safe to feed?
Think I would rather stick to the chicken/rice etc.

Be careful with chicken, its not suited to all dogs tums, I would try some natural yoghurt, to soothe a sore tum, and a bit of plain boiled rice, I wouldn't go overboard though as it can quickly have the opposite effect.

not sure whether it applies if it's a puppy but last time henry had runs for a couple of days vet said to starve him for 24hours. she thought it was strange i was giving him rice and chicken as he usually has kibble. asked my why i changed his diet. it's quite hard not to feed your dog for a day as bonkers as that sounds! did stop the runs though

A little tree barks ( slippery elm) powder in food  works really well
