Tomatoes and cucumber???
« on: June 26, 2009, 06:45:33 PM »
Are these okay for a dog to eat?? My 4yr old DD is mad about salad veg and Belle has bits of cucumber and tomato when I am cutting them up for her. I am just wondering whether this is ok as she loves them. I wasn't aware you shouldn't feed dogs grapes so I thought I'd better ask ;)

I'm sure they're both ok :D. I have a question of my own on the same subject if you don't mind :shades:. How many carrots can a dog eat a week? Is one a day ok? Brodie LOVES them :luv:

Most definitely ;). She might like it frozen first to soothe her mouth. Brodie was a nightmare at this age ::)

You might have to double check this one but I was told at dog training that tomatoes...both plant & fruit (?) are poisonous to dogs!!! It's not something I've given to mine (& won't after being told!) so not a prob. but cuccumber I do & carrots they'd eat by the 1lb if they could (was told by same trainer that carrots are ok but are hard to digest and 'come out the same the other end'....just chewed!.....bit like sweetcorn I guess. (TMI  i know  ph34r  ;))

Well, mine get carrots pretty regularly a small one a day should be fine - although I feed more for their teeth as lindseyp has mentioned they don't really get digested  ;) :D. My two also LOVE cucumber and always get it but I've never really fed them Tomato - I've never heard of it being a problem but it's not something I think I'd feed mine as it doesn't 'feel right' because it's pretty acidic and tomatoes are related to deadly nightshade and potatoes ;) (Can you tell I take a really scientific approach to feeding my dogs  :005:)

I know someone ages ago posted a link that had a long list of what was poisonous for dogs but I can't find it :-\. Glad to hear about the carrots, I'm trying to cut down the chews and treats with Brodie and they are a good alternative (not sure what she'd prefer if you asked her though :005:)

I'm sure tomatoes are fine.  Last summer my friends labrador would help himself to ripe tomatoes straight from the tomato plants (and he's still around to tell the tale).  He never went for the green ones, but would sniff out the perfectly ripe ones. :D

Tomatoes
Tomatoes can cause tremors and heart arrhythmias. Tomato plants are the most toxic, but tomatoes themselves are also unsafe.  Tomatoes (plant and fruit) contain tomatine, an alkaloid related to solanine. As the fruit ripens, the tomatine is metabolized. Therefore, ripe tomatoes are less likely to be problematic for animals. Clinical signs of poisoning include lethargy, drooling, difficulty breathing, colic, vomiting, diarrhea or constipation, widely-dilated pupils, paralysis, cardiac effects, central nervous system signs (e.g., ataxia, muscle weakness, tremors, seizures), resulting from cholinesterase inhibition, coma and death. (This information comes from veterinarians, and the ASPCA Animal Poison Control Center.) (All parts of the plant except the tomato itself are poisonous to humans, although some people are sensitive to the ripe fruit also.)

Tomatoes also contain atropine, which can cause dilated pupils, tremors, and heart arrhythmias. The highest concentration of atropine is found in the leaves and stems of tomato plants, with less in unripe (green) tomatoes, and even less in ripe (red) tomatoes.

Have found this on http://www.bfresq.org/ref/toxic_to_dogs.htm  (not sure if I've copied/pasted correctly....still learning  ph34r )
Lots of sites out there with varying advice but IMO better safe than sorry  ;)   Hope it's of help  :-*

Our dogs eat carrots, apples, cucumber, tomatoes (not often and usually just a cherry one  ph34r)

One particular American cocker also steals and eats (given half a chance) peaches (he spits the stone out), bananas (including the skin - yuk), pears and plums (also spits out the stone).

Can't see why raw fish would be poisonous?

Each of ours has either apple or carrot every day (I alternate them) with no ill effects.... and they all have lovely teeth!  ;)

Thankyou all for your replies, its so odd what they can't have isn't it, I think I will stop giving her bits of tomato but will carry on with the cucumber and try her with a carrot, thanks again :luv: Jo and Belle ;)

It's not the fish itself, but the parasites they have. If the parasite itself is infected with the microorganism Neorickettsia helminthoeca this can kill your dog.
