Eye Operation...
« on: July 19, 2009, 09:30:35 PM »
Unfortunately Abi maybe having a operation to remove her eye...
Since we have Abi, shes always had a bad eye (right eye) before we even had her she had to have her eye cleaned out 3 times a day everyday, still does have to be done, I think shes gradually going blind in that eye too now. Every year its a trp to the vets because it seems to have times wear it flares up alot, only getting worse, at first the vet said when she was a puppy he thought it was conjuntivitis, but the vets haven't really been able to say what it is since. But we went to the vets yet again yesterday dinner time, and we mentioned the operation, he was abit hesitant at first until we explain it was painful for her, having to clean it out 3 times a day, which must hurt for her, and she doesnt really use that eye. We also said that we've noticed she has a dry nose and dribbles alot and the same side of her face, and then he mentioned it could be partial facial paralysis, which is nerve damage, which would explain alot. After that the vet seems to think its a good idea now to have her eye removed.
So I think we're going to book her in, on the first couple weeks of August for her operation.
Im abit hesitant because he mentioned blood clot, which I hate the sound of, as we've lost two dogs from blood clots, one after an operation too.
I was woundering if anyones had any experience of this operation or anything, that could help please?

So sorry to hear this, poor Abi :'(. I know PennyB's Ruby has had both of her eyes removed. I hope the operation goes well if you go ahead with it and Abi adapts quickly :luv:

What about a second opinion from a eye specialist just to be sure its the only option?

Poor Abi. :'( :'(
No advice I'm afraid. A second opinion would be no harm?

I know just how you feel Nikki, as my little girl, Tinker, will have one of her eyes removed when she is spayed in Sept.
She has a different condition to what Abbi has but must still be just as uncomfortable. PennyBs Ruby did have her eye removed & there was a thread about it (sorry....you'll have to search for it as I'm not sure how to paste the link  >:( )  I think it would be very useful for you to have a look at, as there are pictures too & although they are very quite distressing to look at, I am now better prepared for what to expect for Tinker post op.  Lindsey

You joke but my vets said he'd ordered 'false eyes' in for 2 owners who's show dogs had to have an eye removed.....don't think I'll be going down that road for Tinks  ph34r  :020:

I too would suggest a specialists opinion, then you know you have explored every possible avenue!

Hugs to Abi :luv:

The thing is with Abi's eye is, it isnt going to get better, its the case of whatever we can do to make it less painful or a better life for her. Which in this case I think it is going to be having her eye removed.  :-\

We asked the vet if they did any "false eyes'' or anything, he said no.  :-\

Thank you LindyLou for the link, I read through, making me abit more anxious about it. ph34r

Nikki, I was told by my vet that false eyes are possible....ordered in from Germany. Not something i would concider for Tinker but if you want to know more I could find out.  ;)
