grazed pad - vet or self care?
« on: October 02, 2009, 04:12:49 PM »
hello, on a particularly man walk with his friends who he doesnt often see, henry seems to have worn his erm, 'brake' pads out  ph34r the main pad on his left paw is missing half the black skin and is a bit pink. Its like he's taken top layer off. Can't see anything in it, have wasked with hibiscrub and he's not limping. Should i do anything else? do you think it will just get better on it's own or should i try and cover it up when he goes out? it's not bleeding.
thanks x

My brothers dog did this and he just kept it clean, bought the ruffwear boots so she couldn't pick at it and it would keep it clean on a walk. He bathed it with salt water and put antiseptic cream on it and it healed without problem after a week.

Our previous spaniel did this more than once. Its along time ago but from what I can remember I think the first time it happened we took him to the vet but after that didnt bother as the vet didnt do much. They always healed well on there own, just remember to keep it clean. Is you're dog limping, ours used to and he looked so sad with his little paw held up in the air. I think he just wanted sympathy.

surprisingly, as he can be a right wuss, he isnt limping, but def a bit steadier than usual. even had a 7 year old walk him today without towing her into the reservoir lol! have been keeping it clean, a friend suggested putting vaseline on it to protect it on the walk then clean it afterwards, will give that a go too

My trainer uses spray or paint on plaster on her golden retrievers. She swears by it. Rufus winced a bit when I tried it, but that as on a cut.

If he's prone to it you could always get some Paw Wax to use as a preventative once it's healed  ;)

Have you seen this website?  Its like NHS direct for dogs (and other animals) and it's free.  Not had cause to use it yet but it is mentioned in this months Your Dog Magazine.

Good luck.

it's this one

I've had a look and put in a few fake symptoms to test the interactive software....each time the result was 'you need to contact your vet immediately'

TBH you get far better advice on COL  :lol2:
