Penny's spay update

Hmmm - well yesterday was a bit rough. Penny got dropped off fine and they told me to phone about 2pm to fix a time to pick her up. I had to take my oldest to a hospital appointment and when we came out, about 11.45am I'd got a missed call on my mobile. I thought I was going to be sick on the spot, but called vet and they said all fine, she'd come round from anaesthetic quite quickly but seemed a bit distressed at being in the cage, so if I wanted to get her within the next hour or so that would be fine.  We got her but by the time we'd got home (only 10 mins in car) she was alternating between whimpering and real anguished howl/screaming. It was the most horrendous sound, and I was convinced that they must have forgotten to give her the pain killers. I called surgery and they assured me they'd given her as much pain relief as pos. and she couldn't have any more 'til this morning, so the only option would be to re-admit her for observation. I thought that would distress her even more, so kept her at home, with an option to take her in if she got worse. Very very slowly she calmed down, but kept pacing, crying and couldn't settle. It was probably a couple of hours before she was half sleeping but still whimpering, and it wasn't 'til tea time that the crying stopped. I spent the afternoon between tears and feeling sick. I slept downstairs with her, and she was far more settled than I'd thought she would be, and she is much brighter today. By last night she'd eaten, drunk and peed, but (sorry to be graffic) even by this morning  she still hasn't pood. Is it normal for bowels to take a bit to get back to normal? I know there's not much in her stomach but she did have tea last night and breakfast today. 

On the plus side, they have done a lovely tidy job of the spey - a very small scar with just one external stitch.
On the down side it's a bit of a shame she went to the groomers on Tues., as her skirt looks as if it's been attacked with a machete and she has a shaved front leg :005: :005:. although be honest, I'm not even really that bothered - I'm just so relieved she's improved since yesterday.

Sending gentle hugs to Penny (and you!), glad to hear she is feeling a little better this morning bless her.  Sorry I don't have any input on spays (I've got a boy) but I'm sure someone will be along to offer you advice shortly.  Hope Penny continues to make good progress, it's so difficult when you can't explain to them what is going on.

Poor Penny and poor you. It sounds like you both had a really rough day  :'( :'( :-*

Sorry to hear you both had such an awful day :'(.

Brodie went through a pretty horrible time too, she wouldn't eat for a few days (I had to hand feed her ::)) and we ended up getting more painkillers for her. It took a while for things in the 'poo' department to get back to normal too :P. Really glad to hear Penny's doing better today, I'm sure soon you'll be trying desperately to keep her quiet :005:.

Don't worry I'm sure she'll be back to normal soon. As I said on my previous posts, at 6 months mine got over it quicker than the older ones, what I did omit to say that part of Rosie's feeling sorry for herself involved crying squealing and generally being unable to settle for the first night. Hopefully Penny is over that now. If you think about it it must be really strange for her, she went to the vets got left, went to sleep and then woke up with a sore tummy feeling sick and disorientated. If she's not pooed by tomorrow or you're still worried mention it to the vet and they may give her something so she isn't straining.x

Thanks for all the messages. I'm happy to say that we have progressed slightly in the poo dept.  :020: and she did a little (without apparent discomfort) earlier. She is still quiet but miles better than before, and has a post op check tomorrow, so it looks as if she's doing fine :blink:

Glad she is on the mend!  As I said in the other post Maddi bounced back super quick at the same age.  Keeping her on lead for specified time was more of a problem.

Hattie was just the same, i travelled home with her in the car wishing i could go back to that morning and i would not take her.  But within 24 hours she was much better, except she kept trying to lick her wound at every chance ::).  Hope Penny continues to feels better  :luv:

Hi - so glad she's feeling better, it's the worst feeling in the world when you know they are in pain but you can't do anything about it. I fretted over Ruby like mad too, but within three days she was absolutely back to normal - in fact the post op week was worse cos she so wanted to get out and run off lead and play with my other dog and couldn't, i think that made her more miserable than the op itself. Big hugs to Penny  :luv:

Hope Penny's feeling better soon.  Just keep an eye on her and make sure that you feed food that will be easy to pass (iyswim).  Vet told me to feed Misha her usual food, however she ended up being really constipated which made going to the loo very painful for her after such a big operation.  Was advised to feed something that was easily digestible like Chappie (canned) as it has a lot of fish oil - totally did the trick and she was fine in a couple of days. 

It was about 4 days before Misha would get up and go to the loo by herself - I was having to carry her before that.

We had to carry meg down the back doorstep for a couple of days after hers :luv: poor little girl. penny will be absoloutely fine im sure, she will just be feeling extremely sorry for herself - she knows that because you love her so much, if she milks it she will get even moreee attention :luv: :005: the worst bit for meg was wearing that 'daft lampshade' :005:. she will be back to her old self in no time dont you worry :D xxxx

Sorry I missed the update and very sorry to hear she was so unhappy after her op.  :'( Hope the post op check went well. The best thing for my two was putting little T-shirts in them, firstly to stop them getting at the wound but secondly esp for Roxy was that she felt so much more 'safe' with her t-shirt on. She was really on edge whenever the t-shirt came off. We've used it since for other situations when she's been frightened like when she got multiple wasp stings recently. Def a worthwhile tip (thanks col!!)  :blink:
