Anyone switched from Beta with good results?
« on: January 31, 2010, 03:52:49 PM »
I'm just doing some research on feeds before switching our two away from Beta. Both of the girls came from the breeder being fed on Beta and Molly has always been OK on it. When I say OK, I don't think her coat has ever been brilliant and she is a little batty  :005: After reading a lot of posts and general info on feeding I'm not convinced about the health benefits of Beta.
Just wondered if anyone had switched away from Beta with good results. I don't want to change for the sake of change but want to improve their long term health. Thanks

What are you thinking of changing them to? Personally I definitely would look at some better quality foods for them, Beta isn't the worst food out there but there are a lot of much better ones, it uses low quality 'meat and animal derivatives' and it contains artificial additives and preservatives.

Some of the posts and info seem positive about Arden Grange and James Wellbeloved and these are probably favourites at the moment. But really considering anything that is a bit more natural.

Not having tried Beta I cannot comment on it good or bad (but from what I have read on COL is seems not to be the best food in the world)

Both Smudge and Katie came from the breeder (at different times) with a bag of Judge's Choice puppy, and neither of them did very well on it ..tummy probs etc. I changed them quite early on #Smudge has Burns with a spoonful of Naturediet and Katie has Naturediet with terrier meal biscuit. and they both are flourishing well.

#I changed them over when they were pups and now they have the adult versions.

Hope this helps
Remembering Smudge 23/11/2006 - 3/8/2013, Branston 30/8/14 - 28/10/22, and Minstrel 24/6/13 - 13/8/24 all now at the Bridge.

I changed Bonnie Boo from Beta to Burns and it suits her well, she lost weight which she needed to a bit and now seems pretty constant and I'm also convinced she is calmer on it. I know though from other members it doesn't suit all dogs but worth a try

Have a look at Barking Heads and Healthy Paws too, in my opinion they're two of the best dry foods available, they use natural, high-quality ingredients and don't contain any cheap fillers, by-products, additives, preservatives etc. I used to feed Arden Grange but changed to Healthy Paws a few months ago and I wouldn't go back now, the dogs wolf it down (even Rodaidh who was a picky sod on AG) and they've never looked better.

We changed Ambi from Beta to JWB on vets advice after she had a really bad bout of gastro.  Her coat is a lot nicer since the change and her skin condition cleared beautifully.  We also changed Wisp from Arden Grange to JWB but he preferred Beta, as did the rottie, so they're back on Beta and only Ambi gets JWB.

Thanks to Nic, we have ours on Healthy Paws (well Baja is being slowly introduced over the next months as he comes off of his perscription diet) Mole adores it though.

My pet shop I order it through wont stock Healthy Paws anymore as they don't sell enough of it but order it in for me. They sell lots of barking heads, which we considered and Mr Grumpy (our pet shop owner) tells me Barking Heads offer a full refund if your dog doesn't like the food

Personally I like feeding them Healthy Paws as it's natural and is very low fat, which is something we need for Baja.

Henry is on Beta, and does really well on it. Always getting comments on how good his coat is. I guess some foods suit some dogs more than others.
He was on Arden Grange when i got him but wouldnt eat it, nor Hills, so did ProPlan until he was an adult, then needed to credit crunch shop and went for Beta pet maintenance as was about £15 cheaper.

I changed lucky from Beta to Burns - she had a bad reaction at first - lost weight and didnt seem to get full up. i did not want to put her back on Beta so as advised here, i put her on chicken and rice for a week and reintroduced burns (I had purchased enough on line to last until adulthood) so couldnt afford to waste it. what i did for a good while was to add fresh veg to the burns, to fill her up and now, twice a week i still add something else (fish etc). I would have to say she now seems settled on her food and i feel happy that she is having good food and i wont be changing it for good while yet :D

Thanks for the replies, some food for thought there  :005: (sorry) I have contacted Healthypaws and they are sending a sample over. Looking at the info on that it looks a good food so might give that a try see how it goes. Thanks again.

Roxy started on beta puppy and we switched from that to JWB.  I honestly can't say I noticed a lot of difference as I did it at about 5 months so she was changing all the time anyway! However I know she is being fed 'better' food so that was enough!

Billy is on healthypaws and although it's a very good food and he loves it, I am finding him to be very hungry whilst on this food.
