Violet has broken her dew claw
« on: January 31, 2010, 05:47:24 PM »
Violet has broken her dew claw :(

I noticed a couple of days ago that it seemed to be chipped a bit, so I've been keeping an eye on it. This morning, she was limping, so I had a look at her dew claw & it's broken, almost all the way through, just sort of hanging by a thread. It hurt her to let me look at it   :'(.

For now I've put a bandage on it, just so she doesn't catch it on anything & I'm going to ring the vet in the morning. She's walking ok, just a bit slower than usual & she's fine in herself, so it's not an emergency.

Is there anything else I can do to help her?

Baja did this over a year ago, it was bandaged up by the vet, so i would think you have done the right thing and pop her in tomorrow.

Hope she keeps the bandage on

Aww bless her that sounds painful  :luv:

I'd just keep it bandaged until you can see the vets  ;)

Ouch!! not nice, sounds like you have done all you can - hopefully the vet will be able to sort it tomorrow.

She's fine thanks, still bandaged, but we're seeing the vet tomorrow afternoon.

They couldn't fit her in today & the receptionist asked me some questions as to whether there was any blood (no), could she walk ok (yes) & checked with the vet to see whether they needed to get her in as an emergency. The answer was no. I didn't think it was an emergency and was happy to wait until tomorrow because she's quite comfortable.

I think the vet will just snip the end off & possibly bandage it again for a few days.

Well, we've been to the vets this afternoon. Waited about half an hour, went in to see the vet & it was all over in about 20 seconds :)

The vet took one look at Violet's dew claw, told me to hold her head & just pulled it off (the dew claw - not her head!)

She said she wished all the consultations were that simple. While we were there, she snipped the end off her other dew claw, just to prevent another incident.

Anyway, all sorted, & Violet never felt a thing, so she's very happy :)

I'm so glad that Violet didn't feel it, they pull nails off at my work if they are broken, and the poor dogs scream the place down! ph34r It sounds like Violet's was almost off, thankfully. :D

Here's hoping she feels fine now. :luv:

I'm glad it was easily sorted and Violet didn't notice it :luv: I'm not squeamish but I dunno if I could pull a nail off (myself or a dog!).

Awwwwwwwwww, bless her.  :luv: I'm glad she's ok. Tally did this a while back and it was right out at an angle and he was in a lot of pain. The vets had to snip it off quite short and it bled a bit, but then it was fine and dogs being dogs it was soon forgotten. Hope she's feeling better soon.  :D

That made me laugh too  :005:
Ozzy's dew claw is quite long now and hurts when he jumps onto your knee but he won't let me touch it.  I was going to wait until his next vet appointment and ask them to check it out.
