Can Cockers Only Count to 3?
« on: February 03, 2010, 09:58:54 AM »
Only ask because when drying paws all three of my cocker spaniels, past and present, stand beautifully still for three paws and then fidget like mad and look eternally surprised that I should want to dry ANOTHER one!? :o  This is such a feature that my whole family say 'lets dry your three paws - and then your spare!!  :005:
Or is it just us? mmmmmmmmm

Disney is the exact same  :lol2:  As soon as the 3rd paw has been dried, he tries to do a bunk! I then inform him he has 4 paws so he grudgingly comes back and lifts up the remaining paw  :lol2:

This happens on every wet walk without fail but still makes me chuckle every time  :luv:

:lol2:  I have never thought about it before but Mason does it too - he lays down and gives up after 3 paws have been done  :005:

Bonnie quite happily lifts up her front paws but she has a real moan when I do her back ones, i think i am going to change my attack mode and do the rear ones from behind her. It might be that doing them from the front i have to twist her leg a little.

Smug reply here :005: Mine can count to 4, even Louis :lol2:

I always do their paws in the same order. Maybe that helps?

I get them to sit while I dry the right front then left front. Then I say stand and I dry the left back paw, then say turn round, which they do, so I can dry the right back paw. Sometimes I still have to give Louis a gentle push to make him turn round, but not often.

Haven't got a clue, I've given up trying to do 8 paws so they just get squirted with the hose pipe shake off and come in... then I have to vac and wash the floors again... and their bed ::) ::) ::) ::)

I've given up trying to do individual cleaning with 12 paws to do, by the time I get the first 4 done the other 8 have created a mess anyway ::) :005: I just make them walk over the Turtle mat and a towel in the back porch a few times and hope for the best.

I have noticed this when I bath them though, they'll let me dry their front paws and then they either roll over and try to eat the towel or do a runner to start their mad wall of death when I try to dry their back feet :005:

TBH he dries his own paws (the advantage of teaching 'spin' both ways  :lol2: ) so we rarely have to manually 'do' the counting procedure  :lol2:

Ah yes, the 4th paw is always the hardest to get to. For some reason my lot seem to think being dried with a towel is the most exciting thing ever, they all push and shove to get in there and it quickly descends into chaos. I now pop them on the grooming table one by one, saves me from disappearing under a soggy Cocker piley-on.  :lol2:

That's strange - I only mentioned this to my dog walker on Tuesday!  I said that Tilly seemed to think she only had three paws when I am drying them and seemed astonished that I wanted to dry ANOTHER one!  Cheryl said that a lot of the dogs she walks are exactly the same - can only count to three  :005: :005:.

Strange but true!

Mine can def. count to 2  :shades:  If i happen to forget their 2nd lunchtime biscuit, all hell breaks loose.  :005:

I usually only dry their paws if they are sat in the boot of the car & they are very good at letting me wipe them, except if there are other dogs walking past, then its more important for them to get a birds eye view of the competition,  ph34r :005:

At home i have the doormat & if its wet a couple of towels down, then just get them to walk over this.  Luckily we don't have grass, so their paws aren't too messy.
