Not eating again !!
« on: February 03, 2010, 01:07:53 PM »
Milo about a month ago has been poorly with vomiting and runny poos, then went off his Eukanuba dry food.Took him to vet who said she thought he was maybe just being fussy. She suggested adding some wet food. That worked for a while but now again he isn't eating very much at all.I changed him onto Royal canin with wet food, fine for a while, but he is now taking to spitting the royal canin onto the kitchen floor and only grazing on the wet food.He will eat it if there is chicken or egg through his dinner though >:( He lost a bit of weight the last time and then put it back on.He is now 10 months old and really does need to fill out a bit yet.Anybody else had this problem.

William was a fussy eater when he was a puppy and I used to worry endlessly and tried adding all sorts of things to his food.

In the end I became "tough mummy" and would put his food down (JWB kibble at that time), usually with a bit of warm water added, and if he hadn't eaten it within a few minutes I would calmly pick up the bowl and throw the food away, ignoring the shocked spaniel eyes. It also helped that he was occasionally fed at my friend's house with her Golden Retriever. Ruby ate William's food a couple of times while he was faffing about playing with it and my friend didn't refill his bowl, but left him without until the next mealtime.

It worked within a very short time and he's had no eating problems since. If you're sure that Milo is well and not ill, perhaps you could try as above for a few days? He might lose a bit of weight but he won't starve himself and will eat up when he's hungry.

My boy was also a fussy eater at that age, and I had to do the same as Elaine - put his food down with no extras in it and if he didn't eat his food I would then take it away.
He went a couple of days without eating, but after that he was fine and hasn't refused much since. :D

Ruby went through this stage, she got really fussy with her food.  We stopped all her little treats (she likes nothing more than sharing my toast with a little bit of mrs darlington's lemon curd on  :005:) and just reverted back to putting her dry food in her dish.  I feed Ruby in the morning, she tends to be a dog that snacks throughout the day, but by the end of the evening it has always gone ( I know some would disagree with this and remove the dog's bowl after a certain time, but that would not suit her)  I never fill her bowl again if she finishes it early, she waits again until next morning. She is approx 12.5 kilos and maintains this weight quite comfortably.  I think you have to show a little "tough love" in this case, that way Milo will hopefully get back into a routine and appreciate what food you give him.

Bracken was a little bit fussy at first, but now knows  :shades:

She eats it at the time or she waits for her next feed - tough Mummy  ;)
