Do you get ticks in any particular places i.e long grass? Also are they obvious or do you need to go looking for them?

I have a couple of o'toms at the ready....  :D

at the moment they seem to be deer ticks so in the woods normally - our vet says that it's deer ticks spring/early summer and then more sheep ticks throughout the summer and a combo of both late summer/autumn  ::)

Thank you - and do you check for them after a walk or is it easy to notice them?

When you check after a walk they will be teensy tiny so you could miss them.  Now I know what they look like at the teensy stage I do see them a lot before they attach - when they attach they engorge quite quickly so I don't think you can miss them even on hairy cockers  :D  I usually find them when during cuddle time  ;)

I meant to order a couple of O Tom off internet, in preparation - any good place?

Lesley

just did a quick google - they retail at around £2 so Amazon is as good as anywhere  ;)

I hope you only have need to use the small o-tom, cause the big ticks are a bit :020:

None here yet, I wonder if this year will be the same as last when I found barely any ticks on the dogs despite doing our usual mix of forest and moorland walks. I check them all every day in tick season but last year didn't find any at all until September and even then they only managed to pick up 2 between them... maybe I've invented tick proof dogs :shades: :005:

You can often buy them from your vet, or online.  ;)  Not many pet shops sell them round here  >:(  Whatever you do, don't be tempted to get any other type of tick remover - the others are all rubbish and will often pull the body off and leave the head buried in the skin :020:

EEEEWWWWWWW

Do ticks come from long grass?

If you do a search on here, you will find a link (perhaps from Joules, I'm not sure) with all the information you ever could need about ticks! I'll go and have a hunt for it (it might actually be a sticky) but I'm a bit slow with these things  :embarassed: ;)

Wherever there are deer and/or sheep, you will find ticks! And they WILL find your dog....you can use an o-tom to remove them, as lots of us do, or you can use stuff like Advantix or other kinds of repellants, the vet will advise you. They are truly disgusting, but you just have to deal with them  >:( And yes, you could find yourself an unwitting host if you lived in tick heaven like I do; but it's doubtful many other places in the UK have them quite as bad as the West coast of Scotland, so you might be ok  :005: :005:

We had a little dog in last week with a huge one, it was there in the waiting room, but by the time the dog went into the consulting room, it was gone! ph34r

I hunted high and low, and could not find it - it has either gone off on another dog, or is hanging around the vets waiting on some unsuspecting person to just walk past it and not see it (cos they have sore eyes  ;) :005:). :o :lol2:
