When should he be clean through the night?

Rupert is 15 weeks old and has been clean in the house for a few weeks now 

He sits by the back door every time he wants to go out to wee/poo.

However, at night he is shut in the kitchen and sleeps his crate with the door open, its not a big kitchen! We take up his water around 8pm he is normally fast asleep by 930pm. We take him out for a wee then put him into the kitchen for the night

We put some paper down on the floor and when we get up in the morning (630am to 7am)he will always have weed on the paper. Occasionally when left in the day (for no longer than 2 hours) he will have weed on the paper.

When should we expect him to not do this? Are we confusing things by putting paper down, should we be cleaning up straight from the floor? Its tiled so not a problem if so

Id get rid of the paper for a start.  He will probably have no difficulty going through the night - What time do you take him out for his final wee ?

Is he used to having the crate door shut?  If so, you could try shutting it until he has got out of the habit of going when ever.

he goes out around 10pm for final wee then we get him up around 630am and at some point in between he will have had a wee. Maybe thats too long to expect him to hold on?

he has not had the crate door shut on him since we got him and really gets upset when it is. Hes very good at being left in the kitchen and never crys/barks so I know we are getting somewhere its just this morning wee that needs to be dealt with!

Yeah, Alfie no longer has paper down (because it just gets demolished ) so if he needs to go when we are out, he just does it where his paper would be. He hardly has any accidents now though. Also, he had his crate door shut at night from day one, and for the first few nights we got up once during the night to let him out. I slept through my alarm after a couple of nights though and the little angel went all night . At 15 weeks he should be able to hold it until morning. Alfie is 16 weeks now and goes all night with no problem and has done since he was about 10 weeks. Hope this helped xxx

So we should just take up the newspaper and that will sort out the problem?

When we first had him we had the crate in our room which was shut but he just used to wee in it when he needed to go. Its not even that big a crate! 

Hes perfect when we are in the house and he can get to the back door

I would think 15 weeks is awfully young to hold from 10pm to 6.30am....Glen was definitely not dry through the night at that age as he only had a wee bladder. I would imagine you can expect a few more accident paper or not for a whiley yet but he will stop in time

I've been trying to remember when Louis started to go through the night consistently and I'm sure it was more like 5 to 6 months than 15 weeks.

Even now, when he's 9 months, I have to be down the stairs pretty quick in the morning because he's really desperate when he wakes up. Only a week or so ago I came down the stairs and he galloped down the hall in front of me towards the back door leaving a trail of pee in his wake

I put both of mine out at about 11.00 - 11.30pm and stand there with them to make sure they pee. I get up just before 7.00am but sometimes Louis will start hoo-hooing a bit before then if he's desperate.

We dis use newspaper, as Honey was already paper trained when she came to us, and we knew, due to work, that there would be times she was left longer than it was fair to expect to hang on....

We knew it would take longer, but it suited our circumstances.

I would say Honey was 100% reliable until she was about 10 months.... she was 95% there by about 5 months, but once or twice a week we would get the odd accident....

My 18 week old still wakes us up about 50% of nights with barking. So shes dry in the sense she doesnt do it in the house but it does mean im getting up stll. Recently dry night are becoming more and more frequent and she can manage from 11pm to 5am which is her usual scedule.

Id start to discourgage using the paper as he might not be trying to hold on all night and is just using the paper. He'll get there in the end in his own time. Its just fustrating in the mean time. My oldest dog was dry through the night by week 13 but we;ve since realised we got very lucky. Someone we go walking with was coming down to wet patches at 7 months.

we only just started putting the paper down recently so it was easier to clean up in the morning but perhaps that was a mistake 

will just have to cross fingers and hope that he grows out of it, going to try putting him to bed later tonight to see if that helps
