Excessive drinking and incontinence
« on: March 28, 2010, 01:56:17 PM »
One of our foster dogs in German Cocker rescue has a problem in that he drinks excessively and isn't always able to control his bladder (which isn't surprising when you see the amount of water he consumes).

He's already been to the vet's and his blood test results showed nothing abnormal. He has been de-wormed. We thought of Cushing's but apart from the excessive drinking, he shows no other symptoms.

Someone suggested it could be psychological. If so, then maybe this should have been posted in Behaviour...  ph34r

I'm grateful for any feedback!

I was thinking Diabetes Insipidus ? :dunno:

here's a link http://www.mirage-samoyeds.com/diabetes2.htm

It's really weird, I only learned about this a couple of weeks ago from a COL member and have since seen several cases appear on other forums  :o

my maggie (RIP) had this and was diagnosed with diabtetes.  She had insulin injections every day for about 2 months but did not improve.  Sadly she was then diagnosed with a tumour on her pancreas and had to be PTS.

They only found this when they did the scan.  Could it be this?  I really hope its not.

My old boy had these symptoms and he was diagnosed with diabetes insipidus.  At that time (7 years ago) the treatment was available in tablet form or eye drops.  I chose to use the tablets and after a few days, the symptoms were all under control.

Thank you for your replies. :D

This boy is only three years old. He's booked for ultrasound and x-rays on Tuesday so hopefully we'll find out more then.

PS Thanks Helen for the link about diabetes insipidus (which it could very well be). ;)

Poor lad!
are his poos ok? His weight looks ok,  doesn't it.
 Has he just been vaccinated?
My springer had the same problem a few years ago, but also did 'cowpats'. X rays showed excessive abdominal fluid. I was told to measure how much she drank (fill some bottles). The vet regarded the diabetes insipidus as part of a complete metabolic confusion (vaccine reaction?). She was losing weight in front of our eyes and as well as steroids he prescribed Panzyme and low fat diet. This worked like magic , proper poos and reduced thirst, death narrowly averted. Her diagnosis was exocrine pancreatic insuffiency. Insulin balance is regulated by the endocrine pancreatic system, and as everyone says can severely affect thirst.
She still drinks more than normal, and I snatch it away to avoid 'accidents'. She doesn't know when to stop, but its not obsessive .
Good luck with the vet. It would be interesting to know the German approach!
