Fish Question for Raw Feeders
« on: April 13, 2010, 07:41:39 PM »
What fish do you feed your dogs and how do you feed it, i.e whole & fresh from fishmonger, from a tin?

Would be very interested in your replies.  :D

We just feed tinned from the supermarket... we tried raw and whole from the fishmonger, but Honey wouldn't have anything of it!!!  :005:

mine love fish and sometimes have a bit of raw salmon. I don't buy it in for them but sometimes if I buy some for myself and there is a spare piece then they have it between them.

Ours have tinned sardines or pilchards.

I'm sure there is a thing about RAW salmon and you shouldn't feed it to dogs.

Sure there was a thread on here sometime ago. I think it has something to do with some sort of worm.

Can anyone remember ?

yep - there is some kind of parasite BUT I don't know if it's found in our part of the world :dunno:  I know it's found in some parts of the States and Canada.  Apparently the parasite only affects dogs - no other species - websites from the state say to freeze salmon for 24 hours to kill any bugs and then feed thawed.

Just did a quick google search and found this:

Raw salmon in parts of North America may carry flukes and Neorickettsia helminthoeca. This can cause salmon poisoning disease in pets. It has been reported in dogs not cats, but results in lethargy, high temperature, vomiting and bloody diarrhoea and may mimic infectious enteritis. The mortality rate is around 90% if untreated. It is preventable by cooking the salmon.

I switched my 3 to BARF a while back & do include raw fish in their diet  - white or oily fish ....& they love it

this is the one I get for my 3 (they do fish in blocks too  ;) )

I also give sprats as a treat or mix with their meat.

Not sure if you can get the fish from pet shops (pampurred pets do the raw meats & may be able to order fish) I get mine from a shop dealing in only BARF diet. You can also order through Prize Choice. Hope this helps answer your question  ;)

I use raw fish like mackeral, tuna, sardines and herring and have used some raw salmon (without illness and I'm fully aware of the problems). They love prawns so I add a small amount of  cooked prawns. I also do tinned tuna, sardines, pilchards, mackeral, pink and red salmon and anchovies. Never had a problem. The girls however prefer fishy days to Logan, he will eat it just takes slightly longer to get started. Saturday is usually meat free day so thats when I'd be likely to give fish.

Just my personal experience here with my lot.

I can feed them tinned fish or raw white fish no problem but raw mackerel is barfed back up as quick as it goes down!  :005:  So I tend to flash fry before feeding it.

I did not know about the salmon problem, they don't get it that often to be honest but I will cook it in future.
I did get them fresh whole sardines once and they would not eat them so I cut them up and they just dropped fish bits all around the kicthen it was gross, never again!!!!

Sushi bars never serve salmon raw, it's always smoked or cooked. I assume there is a good reason for that, and that the problem also occurs in Japan

Rather than try to figure our where the salmon came from, better to just be safe and cook it  :shades:

I am sure I have read somewhere recently that the recommended freezing time to kill flukes in fish and pork is 3 weeks.
