I just read all the way through this and was about to add my input, but then read that you had decided against taking the boys. You have obviously made the right decision for you, as you had so many doubts, but hopefully the 2 boys will get a great new home together soon, and you will get the dog you are looking for.
What I was going to say was that I took on my boy Gari a month off his 9th birthday and we became soul mates very quickly, we went everywhere together, and had a wonderful time, going on lovely holidays and walks. I lost him last year when he was 11 years and 8 months, and although we didn't have as long as I would have liked, I wouldn't have changed a thing, I will always be so glad I took him on, and would do it again.

My point of saying that is to reassure that you when the dog that is for you comes along, age doesn't matter, it is the life you have together that will be important, and you will be able to make a huge difference to that dog's life.

Good luck with your search for your new friend.
