Are Breeders removing Dew Claws these days?

Just wondered if the cocker breeders out there are removing dew claws from young show type puppies or just leaving them these days?

Not as far as I know, I haven't come across any young Cockers in the vets who have had them removed. I don't imagine many vets would want to put young puppies through a GA for no real reason.

Are you thinking of having them removed from Daisy's puppies?

Fiona, they don't remove dew claws in young puppies under a GA - they are completely snipped off at 2-5 days old (max) - I'm not commenting on whether this is right or wrong or is painful, just stating how it's done   

I don't know about show breeders but my working cocker breeder leaves them be....and these are for working dogs who are far more likely to be in situations to damage them then show cockers

I take you mean the breeders do it themselves Helen? It's just something I haven't seen happen at my work, and Dougie has his (as my legs and arms can testify! )

Belle (14 mths) had her dew claws removed by her breeder but Monty(4 mths) didn't, both are show type, its legal so i suppose its down to the individual breeder

Not alot of breeder want to take their dogs into the vets at just a few days old. That was certainly the reason i was given for my oldest not being done. And it makes sense.

Amoungst the working cockers, there seems to be the general rule is that the working docked dogs have them off while theyre in the vets having their tails done.

My youngest was done by the breeder. I was given the choice and given that i know alot of dogs who've had issues with them being riped off i decided to have hers off. I came through her puppy hood with alot less accidental claw stratches as a result.

Some dogs have them - some don't - it's a prehistoric throwback to when the prey had to be "held" for the kill.  They are cartilage ie not bone in very young puppies ie 3/4 days old, therefore were often removed when pups are tiny, rather than wait for severely damaged dew claws having to be amputated in adult dogs when the cartilage had changed to bone.

There can be some really nasty dew claw injuries which is why many vets in the past opted to remove them at 3 days old.

I've docked pups (elastic bands) and removed dew claws (snips) in the days before it was outlawed in Scotland.

This is usually what happens with working cockers, they are docked and dew clawed at the same time in the vets when they're 2 days old.

Not sure about what happens with the show cockers though!

When docking was still legal (to the majority) but the law had changed from any layperson being able to do it to a qualified vet, many breeders had to seek out a vet that was willing to do this procedure (this was often done through The Council for Docked Breeds) and whilst pups were docked they would have their dew claws done too.
I know that an awful lot of show people, now that they no longer have the tails docked leave the dew claws intact too.

Florence was born a month after the ban came in and she has her dew claws as well as her full tail.

I was going to have the dew claws removed, but the pups were too ill at that time and I was already fighting a battle with them so I decided to leave it.

When my vet used to dock he also removed dew claws at the same time, but since the ban came in he will no longer do it, so we've not had it done for a few years now.

Nope, the vets do them   

We've never had any issues with Jarv's dew claws when he's been working - it's the luck of the draw really with injury! (and I don't agree that they don't use them, Jarvis definitely does  )
