Training classes in Aberdeen?

Hiya. Does anybody know of any puppy training classes in Aberdeen? I found three contacts through an internet search but two of them don't actually do classes and one is 30 miles away and held outside, so you can imagine the number of rained off classes that would be heading into September/October.

I guess I'm the only Cocker owner in the area.

We went to the little independent pet shop yesterday (as cheap as the big chain and even more friendly) and they have a list of local trainers, unlike the chain who wouldn't mention names, let alone recommend anybody.

Unfortunately, most of them are out of town and the ones on the list who aren't are mostly behavior therapists.

You could try asking at your vet surgery, a lot of vets offer puppy socialisation classes and they may be able to recommend a local training class.

Hi there  Have just looked on the A.P.D.T website  and they have a trainer in Aberdeen.  Look on local trainers.  Hope it is of some help.

Nicola: Our vet doesn't do any of that, although in many ways they were the most helpful surgery around here. Their wab site does still say that they arrange socialisation parties, but they don't. they won't recommend anybody either and didn't have a list of trainers.

Jessie: Thanks for that. I thought I'd checked that site weeks ago, but apparently not as I think that is a name that's not on the pet shop's list.

Hi, not sure where about in Aberdeen you are but we took our Cocker to puppy classes in Cookney. We also struggled to find somewhere local but this one was quite good.

Hello, I have only just noticed your post.  There is one I know of as a friend of a friend has been going for a while and recommended them to me, they are positive paws at whiterashes which isn't the closest but apparently very good....I have pasted the leaflet below as i can't seem to get it linked    (dates are out of date but it has a contact no. etc) their website is under construction.  Good luck!  Good to see more cocker owners around the area! 

The class will commence at 7.30 until 8.30pm at Whiterashes Village Hall, Whiterashes.     

Please bring your puppy’s vaccination record with you on the first evening.

You will need:

    A flat collar made of either leather or fabric, or a walking harness.  No choke chains, half-check collars or slip leads please!

    A leather or fabric lead. Chain leads and extending leads are not suitable. 

    A substantial supply of food rewards.  They must be very tasty and soft, for example, chicken or cold meat, and cut up into very small pieces. Please don’t bring dog biscuits or dry dog food!

    A favourite toy.

    Something for your puppy to lie on - old bath mats are ideal, or an off-cut of carpet.

    Last but not least - remember to bring ‘poo bags’. Dog friendly venues are like gold dust so it is vital that you clear up after your puppy.

Don’t feed your puppy just before class and make sure s/he has had ample opportunity to go to the toilet.

Well behaved children are more than welcome in the class but they are your responsibility and care must be taken when they approach dogs they do not know

Please leave your puppy in the car (if this doesn’t cause distress) for the first ten minutes so.                                                       

The class size is strictly limited and the courses are always oversubscribed. If you are unable to join the course, please be considerate and let me know as soon as possible so your place can be offered to someone on the waiting list.
     
The course will run for eight weeks at a cost of £60.00, payable in advance. Please return the Registration Form with a cheque, made payable to W A MACHELL and with your dog’s name on the reverse, in the enclosed SAE by THURSDAY 11 FEBRUARY to confirm your place. 

Please note: Places will be allocated to those on the waiting list if I have not received your registration form or heard from you by the above date.

Whiterashes is on the A947 between Newmachar and Oldmeldrum.  If you are coming from the Newmachar direction the hall is the first building on the right.  Coming from Oldmeldrum, it is on the left. If coming from Inverurie, take the Keithhall Road to the end and the hall is almost opposite the T Junction.

Thanks Joanne. The problem we have is that during the winter, heading out of town after my wife has been at work all day (she runs a company so tends to do a 12 hour day) would be too much, and once that foul weather sets in, who wants to go out around the block let alone across town and into the country.

We've identified two places in town that have some recommendations from people we've met - B & B Munro and Gordon Barnett - but we haven't managed to make any arrangements yet. The Whiterashes one was recommended by a pet shop.

  With a working cocker in your house, you're going to have to get used to getting her out in all weathers it I'm afraid
