Chestnut Prickles
« on: November 05, 2010, 10:12:57 PM »
Does anyone else's cocker make a stand (or should that be a sit!) when coming across chestnut shells?  There are so many chestnut trees in our area and so it's hard to go on a walk and not come across paths covered in chestnut shells. Abbi completely refuses to walk over these paths and I end up carrying her over these bits! She just calmly sits when we get to a path with any chestnut shells on it! Each walk seems to involve me carrying her at some point! I get a few funny looks when we meet other people and I try to quickly explain that it's the "prickles", she doesn't like walking over them! If she does walk over them she does a funny hop, skip and a jump until she's over them!

Not come across Chestnut shells but Tinker does this with fallen Holly leaves & those prickly low growing weeds  >:D  (sorry don't know their correct name  ph34r ) she either stops walking or stands on 3 legs with a paw in the air  :luv:  - I have to carry her too  :005:
(good job she's only little & doesn't usually get too muddy  :P )
If your dog thinks you're the best.....don't seek a second opinion!!

My big brave New Forest boys take it all in their stride - prickly sweet chestnut cases, dead gorse, trailing brambles and fallen holly leaves :D

Did you believe that? Not quite true because William tries going on tippy toe through fallen holly and Louis rolls over and asks for help if he gets gorse tangled in his feathering :005:

Ha ha - a lesson to us all - always read the small print lol The muddies don't usually bother unless they get prickley bits in their feet, then they do a hoppy dance till either they get it out themselves or I do.

We have the race to who can get the chestnuts first! Lou likes to carry the prickly cases round in his mouth (although as they are going brown now, he's loosing interest  ::)) Every time I roll a chestnut to break the case, Jasp and Lou are waiting in the wings to swoop and get the nuts first  >:(

Jasper has been limping for the last couple of days though as I think his feet got a few prickles in them  :shades:

You'll have to take a brush out with you Brenda and then you can make sure that her path is clear  :005: (my Mum used to have a cocker that didn't like walking through puddles!)

One of are Horses Jane who died some years back hated puddes...She would rather side step one than go through a puddle...(Dangerious in some cases)...Also hated WHITE cows always kept blinkers on Jane in the end so she would not see them in the fields....

You laugh, I HAVE considered sweeping the path behind our house that leads down to the woods but think the neighbours would think I've gone too far with my tidying!

Although they are finishing now Sweep just picks up the sweet chestnuts and proceeds to open them and eats the chestnuts.  Doesn't seem to mind the prickles at all  :shades:
