Destructive/humping behaviour after tea
« on: June 10, 2011, 06:41:57 PM »
For the past few months Freddie has been having a destructive hour and a half after tea. He pants, prowls, humps cushions, blankets, people (if they are on the floor or have their legs crossed). He also chews things he shouldn't despite having stag bars available. It's not lack of stimulation because he did it when we were on holiday when we were out all day walking in the mountains. Why does he do this at the same time every day? Is it hormones? His raw food tea?? He calms down after about an hour and a half. We distract him with games, training, a 3rd walk if he is particularly bad but it is getting wearing (and expensive in terms of destroyed cushions and blankets!) >:D

I don't know the cause but Millie will hump and rip up her bed after she's had her tea, and it doesn't matter if it's raw or dry food  :-\.

Taz sometimes is a bit like this after a long walk or agility - its almost as if he cannot settle - he puffs and pants, stratches the floor, roughs up his bed - to be honest we just ignore him now and eventually he calms down.  Fortunately he doesnt actually damage things though.

No idea what causes it - perhaps over stimulation in Taz's case.

We are going through a similar thing with pepper.(now 9 months). he has usually had a busy day with at least 2 walks  and to be honest we are all tired! I know dogs  can get an energy burst after food but I wonder if they are also tired in the evening  and  not sure what to do with that feeling (this is all my own thinking...I could be completely wrong!)I have started taking him in the garden for a short time to play with his ball. afterwards I sometimes I put him in his crate for 15 mins as I think he is just too tired to know what to do with himself. I don't treat it as a punishment but give him something like his Kong to chew on . He seems quite pleased to be quiet and is better behaved after. In fact the past few days he has been taking himself into his crate for a rest. If he is still too much I  bring him out on a house lead for a bit after that and sit on the floor and stroke and try to help him calm down.
