Help....Fleas!!!!
« on: August 08, 2011, 08:25:23 AM »
I frontlined all my dogs about 3 weeks ago, yesterday when I groomed them I found lots of flea dirt around Isla's back end, so I went over them with a flea comb and found about 3 fleas on each of them and quite a lot of flea dirt, mostly on Paisley.

I did wonder if I'd used the wrong size pipette, it's the one up to 10kg, but Merfyn and Isla are 10kg exactly and Paisley is only 8.5kg!

They're going to be trimmed next week and I can't have them with fleas on as they'll think I don't look after them properly but is it safe to use another flea product on them so close to being treated the last time?

What flea product do you think I should use as frontline spot on clearly hasn't done it's job properly!

Please help!  I feel all itchy thinking about it....goodness knows how they feel!

As you have only just frontlined them I would suggest using Johnsons 4 fleas tablets, they are harmless to the dogs but kill the fleas as soon as the fleas go to feed, you can get them in most pet stores. I swore by them with my Cavie she was a Flea magnet  >:( nothing would keep them away but this at least kiulled them without having to spray her with chemicals.

Thanks for the tip I've just been and bought some from PAH!  Hopefully this works!

I had to back up with the Johnsons last year...

Which front line do you use, I found the over the counter one didn't fully work and now I pay extra to use the Frontline Combo?

I don't use the combo one, perhaps I will next time!  I used to use the frontline spray from the vets but it was hard to judge how much you should spray on and the dogs hated it, I thought a spot on would be so much easier, but if it's not going to work then it's not much easier!

I presume you need a prescription for the combo one then?

I know when a friend at work went to the vets after his dogs had flees he was told that he would need the stronger one (Combo?) that you can only buy from the vets & not online, not sure if that's right

I use Spot On so I checked what the combo is. It doesn't appear to be stronger but has an added ingredient which seems to sterilise the female flea preventing it from breeding.

If I get the right meaning then regular use of Spot On is fine as there wont be female fleas breeding in the crevices of the house but if you forget the Spot On treatment then it is possible that fleas are in the house and will reinfest the dog.

Eventually by using the combo it will sterilise the females and all fleas in the house die. Plus the use of the Dyson  :police: though.  :lol2: And a washing machine set at  >:D to boil the bedding and kill the b's and any eggs.

However, in other posts some COL members questioned the effectiveness of Frontline for tick control in some areas of the country so I don't know if that is also the case with fleas. Some others wont use any chemical on their dog.

I can only speak for mine. Poppy had two ticks in spring time then I Frontlined her and Lucy and no more ticks or fleas. But I'm not in sheep country.

What about using a flea spray to zap the blighters though, then the flea comb, then an insecticidal bath as a temporary measure?
