You have my sympathy re not having a black and white collie do agility...when I first turned up with my boxer they all just pointed and laughed, more so as I said I wanted to do it for fun not competition. Thankfully, my boxer did well and I began to "fit in" so to speak but wasnt included in the "gang" as I didnt own a collie and didnt go to other clubs throughout the week (I did have other things to do!). Sadly she then got spondylosis in her back which affected her legs so we had to give up.

I started taking my younger boxer and she was coming along a treat. She began to get poorly and was diagnosed with juvenile kidney disease with poor prognosis...but she was full of beans and we carried on going...I drew the line when the instructor (who thinks he knows everything) kept making us go and go and go...not only was I out of puff (Im not the fittest!!) but my boxer was going purpley/blue in the tongue...he shouted at us not to stop...In the end I said I was with-drawing her from the class...he kept on having a go and saying get her going on the jumps but she was so out of puff and thirsty I walked out of the riding school and didnt listen to him!!

I was really upset that the health of my dog had been compromised...I did discuss it with the lead person but the instructor said he felt she was fine and "could've run all day" within 2 days she was in the vets on a drip and in renal failure...I never went back to the agility club again even though my boxer loved going...for me it wasnt fun and it was getting personal with the insults etc...

So, after a lot of waffle I can understand what you are saying about your club and the type of people who you are dealing with...I too live in East Kent...I hope you find another more friendly club where you can Both enjoy yourselves as it is a very fun thing to do with your dog...

Hi Carol.

how sad for you to have lost two babies :'(

I have been going through the net and have come up with a club called meadow dogs in Faversham, will see if I can find out anymore about them and then make contact. I don't see the point in not looking forward to it every week, so will find something else to do with him if I can't find another agility club with space.

If I could get over the embarrasment side of things, then maybe HTM again!!.

oh well, back to trying to teach the paw!! we will crack it one day!

Hi, I'm new here, but just wanted to share my own experiences. When I first had my labrador Cadbury I went through the same as you, initially it was with puppy classes - at one I actually got told to my face "Oh no, not another chocolate labrador", at the second one I was reduced to tears. I went to one agility club, but again it was ruled by collies and I was not getting the help I needed - plus some of the owners thought it was ok to let their dogs have a snap at mine. >:(

Well, I hunted and hunted and then I found my current training club where I have now been coming up to 3yrs. It is wonderful, the trainer welcomes all dogs, she has high standards for her agility but everyone is helped to reach them and when you are good enough getting told you can join the display team is like magic. In my class we are all friends, everyone helps each other out, there is only 1 collie in my class, sometimes 2 and everyone else has a different breed. Even on the display team we only have 4 collies and the rest of the dogs range from tiny terrier mixed breeds to possibly a Leonberger next year.

At the end of the day you need to be happy where you go. I made the mistake of trying to stick with a club where I was unhappy and I achieved very little with Cadbury, nowadays I can't believe I put up with it as long as I did!

There will be another club out there that's better and suits you, sometimes it just takes a while to find it. Good luck.

Set up your own non-collie agility club and make a fortune  ;) :005:

Thank you all for your kind replies!!

I have decided not to go back to the original class, I don't want to go onto exams and comps etc, just let Coops have some fun and abit of training thrown in!

thanks to a COL'er, hopefully we will join a new club at the end of sept, and start to enjoy things again.
I do have a laugh at our normal training classes, so don't expect anything serious from me!! ;)

as for starting my own, wouldn't have a clue where to start!!, and certainly dont have the experience!, but always up for a challenge! :D
