Lu Lu my 1st cocker spaniel
« on: September 08, 2011, 04:55:45 AM »
Hi all

I have recently become a new mummy to a beautiful 9 wk old cocker called Lucy.  :D
I have 2 gorg collies already and due to a few stressful reasons my bro was made to give her up by his gf, but also not realising at the time that she was very ill. So one afternoon settling in at mine, I had her at the vets due to bad dehydration, 2 days on a drip and she back with me and bright as a button :D

Toilet training ...
Now I've had one of my collies since she was 8 wks old and never had an issue toilet training, now lulu refuses to do anything outside. Put her down outside and she walks straight back in and wee's inside (even after 20mins of holding it coz the doors shut) any ideas???

Food issues ...
Do many people raw feed their puppies? Both my collies are raw fed and was thinking of raw feeding her. What do you feed a puppy and how much???

General growling ...
Lulu is bit of a growler is this normal from such a small dog? If she doesn't like something your doing she'll growl than go for you (never an issue with the collies) this is an area I need to work on as I have 2 nephews and want it stopped before it becomes the norm for her if she doesn't like something.it seems to be random things like picking her up to taking things out her mouth (she keeps eating bark for some reason)

If anyone can help or give me ideas that would be great xx

Hi and welcome to COL,
Can only recommend persistence with the toilet training and a 'lot' of praise if she does go outside (I could be found clapping and singing with my puppy at 4am in the snow in the back garden when he eventually decided to go), neither of my two are growlers so cant help with that but am sure someone more experienced will be along soon. Enjoy the forum !

How about training her to paper or puppy pads for now and gradually moving it towards the door and outside? It sounds to me as if your wee girl has had a rather stressful time and needs lots of calm to settle her, bless her. I'm sure the growling will not be so bad once she's in a routine.

Meantime, do we get piccies?  :luv:

I can confirm I have a growler too and she will go for you if you try to take things out of her mouth. I have found the only solution to that is to always have a treat handy when in the garden so if she picks up bark, soil or stones she will be tempted to drop it for a treat. I'm hoping she grows out of it when she has adult teeth.   She is generally quite a vocal dog so I'll have to do some training there too.

Hi
Will post pics when I have 5 mins.
She's being very naughty tonight and howling the house down because I won't let her sleep with me.
I'm hoping she will calm down a little. Like i said she has been naughty tonight and enough for my two to tell her off a few times and led to a few snaps from them.  :-\
We have had a few wee's outside today but the weather really isn't helping ... If I was her I'd want to stay inside too.
Tried changing her food today :-/ from chicken & rice back to a normal dried puppy food ... Didn't agree with her @ all! :-(
Chicken & rice for a lil while longer I think.
Has anyone else got a puppy that lives under foot? I've stood on her a few time tonight ... Seriously worried I'm gonna break her if it keeps happening. :-(

Underfoot? - absolutely underfoot, can't tell you how many times she has yelped or how many times I have accidentally closed the door and shut her in another room 'cos she followed me and I didn't see her behind me. She soon lets me know though.  :005:

I believe you need to take a small amount of the chicken and rice out and add the equivelent amount of dried food in, gradually increasing the amount till you've completely changed over.
I'm sure someone will come along with good advice, but as far as I know if you change it all at once it really upsets their tummy.

Hi
Sorry not been back on had a stressful time with lulu of late and was rushed to the vets Monday night and fingers crossed will be coming home tonight :-)
She's ill and we don't know why. Vets have taken samples and we just have to wait for the results.
Think for the next few weeks she'll be on special food from the vets til she gets a lil better then I will slowly swap her on to something else before raw feeding her.
Strangely the house has been so quiet without her and like somethings missing :-( and she's only be with me for order a week. X

Poor Lu Lu (and you!) sounds like she's going through a rough start.  Hope the vet sorts her out soon.

Crikey you're really going through it  :bigarmhug:

Hope they find out what the problem is quickly, and with any luck she'll be home today.

It sounds as though she's been through the mill, poor little tyke. :luv:
