Crying every night

I don't think there is anything wrong with making it clear that you are not happy. I always practise reward based training in every other respect but I have to say that the 5am alarm calls were driving me insane, almost literally. I was waking up BEFORE he even started barking, any time from 4am onwards and then lay there awake just waiting for the barking to start. I know that plenty on here would balk at using stern words as a way of communicating that a behaviour is undesirbable (and I probably wouldn't have done it if he was a nervous dog) but I was getting to the end of my tether. I am sure the barking had become a habit - Freddie thought he had to bark to get someone to come down in the morning. Once we had shown him that we would always come down to him, he stopped. It has not changed his behaviour in any other way.

Even after the talking to she's normal with us not scared or anything. She always used to cower if OH used the voice of doom but now she just looks sheepish. She's not the nervous scared of the OH dog she was when we 1st got her. Now she thinks she's the boss. Lol and quite alot of the time she is lol

Hi, I have it the other way round!  I have a puppy who we dont hear a murmur from all night if she is downstairs in her crate and an OH who whines  that he wants the puppy to sleep with us which results in early morning toilet trips - she then settles downstairs until we get up.

Is there a training manual for the other halves in our lives?

You should write one lol if darcey sleeps with us she's up and down all night and we've got laminate floors so all you can hear is click click click lol darcey is much better now she's gotten out of the habit and the OH gets up if she whines to tell her to be quite and it's sleepy time

Good to see that you worked it out. We were planning on being strict with Aramis but after a few weeks he was allowed on the bed (BIG mistake) and he now classes that as his bed. When we got our husky he was meant to be an outside dog (lasted 1 hour) then he had to sleep in the garage (lasted 1 night) then he was meant to sleep in the spare room (lasted 1 night) then in his basket in our bedroom (2 nights) and now he sleeps next to me on the bed... 

My wife and I end up squashed between two dogs for most of the night, so we've learnt our lesson about dogs on the bed!

I don't mind having her in bed with us Steff and yes she's in the middle lol she also like to sleep in between your legs so there pinned in place all night and you wake up stiff!

Willows crate is in our room id think of doing that if it came to it. She has a cuddle on our bed before sleep and then we pop her in the crate. On the weekends we then allow her on out bed for a cuddle in the morning too.

What amazes me is the fact that an English Cocker can take up more space that a Siberian Husky crossed with something like German Shepherd. Aramis ends up with 2/3 of the bed and the rest of us have to work around him.

It's started again but she's not had a break even the stern voice of the OH isn't working. I don't know what to try now!

We're going through that at the moment, OH allowed Maike into bed in the mornings when she started barking after her 5am wake-up call and this turned into her barking in the night, in the morning... I haven't had an uninterrupted night's sleep in 3 weeks, and suprisingly enough instead of barking to go toilet once at about 4am she suddenly wanted/needed out at least three times.

Well, thank goodness for thick walls and slightly hard-of-hearing musician neighbours as we just decided to let her bark. 40 minutes yesterday at 4:30 in the morning but then she was blessedly quiet. Tonight I slept alright (night nurse and earplugs ) but at about 7 there was a dog in the bed again! I asked OH what was going on and apparently "she's been so good, she only barked once at 4am for about five minutes and then at 5 for five minutes!". Oh well, that's alright then!

I reckon it's going to take another night or two with earplugs and just letting her get on with it to stop the racket at night but hopefully by then the bad habit will have been exorcised.

I'm sorry Darcey has started up again and if you are in a position to do so, maybe sleeping with earplugs for a couple of nights might be the way to go. Once she realizes no one is reacting to her crying she might stop. Leave her with an extra blanket to make sure she's not cold so you can sleep without worrying.

Thanks I can't do ear plugs and have tried ignoring her but the OH can't! I'll pop a blanket in with her tonight to see if it makes a difference.

Well after wrapping her up in a blanket last night we had a full nights sleep yay let's hope it works!
