Kennel Club Bronze - what's involved? UPDATE - we passed
« on: January 25, 2012, 09:15:22 AM »
We've been doing obedience classes for a few months now - although with a break before Christmas, and our trainer has said they are running a bronze testing night at the end of February.

Now - I know unless we can crack stay we have no chance  :005: - but what else is involved?

Thanks!

If you google KC Good Citizen Award Bronze it lists exactly what is expected. It is very basic and you need to show you have reasonable control of your dog.  The important thing is not to be nervous when taking it as your dog will play up and sense something is not quite right.  Heel work and be able to check over your dog i.e. look in ears, open mouth for teeth, the sort of things a vet would check over.

Recall but in bronze you are allowed for someone to hold his collar until you call him.

Don't think I've left anything out.

Good luck.  xx

aha..i have the sheet in front of me so here goes....

1.cleanliness and id.....ie;poo bag and correct tag
2.collar and lead...must be able to put on/take off...must fit and be suitable.
3.walk on lead....approx 30 paces controlled without distractions
4.control at door/gate....the dog must wait for you to go through first, then be invited.
5.controlled walk amonst other people and dogs.
6.stay on lead for one minute.....either in a sit or down....5 paces away.
7.grooming....you must be able to show that you can groom your dog with it becoming nervous/aggressive.
8.examination of the dog.....demonstrate inspection of the dogs body by the handler.
9.return to handler.....10 paces away and then call your dog to you.
10.responsibilty and care......a few basic questions.

Its a really good course...both my cockers have passed bronze, silver and gold......it really gives you a good start to training your dog to become an obedient pooch.....The tests do get harder obviously, but you work up to it....If my ten month old cheeky pup can pass Gold then you can do it.. ;)

Well actually my daughter (9y) and our pup passed - I just sat at the side and watched. :D

So proud of them both - we only mastered stay a few weeks ago when I realized she would do anything if her dinner was involved - even stay in her bed in the kitchen while I put her food down in the porch (had to be quick at grabbing her or her food if she moved before I said go ;))

Sliver is up next in a couple of months.

Huge congratulations to you all!  I'm always very impressed (and envious :shades:) when all these good cockers pass their awards.  I just wish I could get Odie to walk nicely, never mind try for any exam ph34r
Both taken away from us far too soon. x  RIP Angels Odie & Archie, causing mayhem at the Rainbow, no doubt!

Just spotted this as we are currently doing good citizen puppy foundation course however as the day is not a good day for us, I enquired at another cub assosiated with mypetstop and they told me as well as the puppy foundation we would have to do an improvers and intermediate course before we could consider the bronze!!!!!  ph34r sounds a bit deep for my little girl! What do other peep think to this please?   Jes x

Well Pippa was about 9 months when she passed, and we had been going to obedience classes once a week since she was about 11 weeks and allowed to go out and about after her vaccinations.

We'd done a 5 week puppy class (level 1) and then into the level 2 session which we are still in and will be for the foreseeable future!
