Do dogs have intolerances to chicken??
« on: January 25, 2012, 10:04:07 PM »
Max is now 7 months and for the first 5 months he always had loose stools and anal glands would need emptying every 3/4 weeks. I changed food several times and it was only when we moved to jwb turkey and rice that things started firming up.

This helped enough to produce formed poos and stop the anal glands needing emptying but there were still occasions when they became loose again. I thought it may be egg or wheat intolerance so stopped the sardine bread treats but it made no difference.

Over Christmas Max had the best poos ever but I still didn't link it to the chicken until this weekend when we had turkey. I always use chicken for whistle recall and realised that ove Christmas I had been using the left over turkey instead. Every food he had had before jwb was chicken based. Also every time he has had a chicken wing we have had diawotsits.

So I am wondering if it could be a chicken intolerance. Have swapped the natural instinct chicken treats for beef ones, bought minijacks for his bed time biscuits and turkey chunks for recall and am going to see if over the next week it makes a difference. Just wondered if this is known intolerance for dogs as I hear so many of you getting on well with raw wings etc that assumed chicken is ok.

Some dogs can be intolerant to chicken - so it's certainly worth excluding it for a while and seeing if it has a good impact.
Interestingly, some dogs can tolerate raw chicken but not cooked...

Purdey's been tested for allegies & chicken is one of them. (but wasn't for turkey? ) JWB Turkey + Rice & Burns fish & brown rice were the two kibbles we tried before switching to a BARF diet. She never had sloppy stools but had other symptoms linked to allergies. Funny enough, as Claire says, she has chicken in it's raw form in her present diet & still she is virtually symptom free  :dunno:
You can do an exclusion diet as you are doing now but for Purdey with so many allergens, it would of taken a long time to find them all  :-\

hope you've found the cause of Max's problem - so much easier when you know what the cause is  ;)

alfie my lab can't have chicken, it makes his allergies worse... He gets away with a chicken carcass every now and then but too much makes his ears horrendously itchy & sore :( he's fine with turkey though

All my lot have chicken wings except Zen, he gets the diawotsits. Phoebe's pups seem to have a problem with minced beef, they are awful runny afterwards so no more mince for them, everything else is fine. Isn't is weird how they get allergies? Phoebe can and does eat anything. :005:

If Ozzy has anything with poultry in it, it gives him the diawotsits so he's on a very bland diet of JWB Lamb and Rice.  Even treats with a chicken or turkey flavour set it off.  Good job he loves sausages  :005:

Wow, didn't realise it was so common. Will definately keep off the chicken for now and hope the poos continue to be normal. Not easy though as so many treats seem to have it in. Sounds like trying the lamb JWB might be a good idea too.
