Any 3 legged Cockers?
« on: April 01, 2012, 10:20:22 AM »
I got the results of Delilah's biopsy this week and it wasn't bad news but it wasn't good either.  It shows altered bone stucture but no tumour tissue but the specialist has said that doesn't mean there isn't any - her bone is so hard it wasn't easy to take the samples. Our options were another biopsy, CT guided this time.  Amputate and then they will biopsy the whole leg (the bigger the sample the better for the lab) and the third option really isn't an option for me just yet.

Delilah was in so much pain after the first biopsy I really can't put her through that again and it broke my heart to see it, so I have decided to have the amputation. She can't use her leg now anyway and from what I've read it's the most effective way to relieve the pain, also dogs adjust pretty quickly and don't realise they've had the limb removed.

Her op is tomorrow and today I'm feeling slightly sick with nerves for her.  I know I'm doing the right thing but I think it's going to be a big shock for me when I go to collect her.  I'm really not sure what to expect.  Do any of you have experience of having a 3-legged dog?  I saw a young Cocker recently and I didn't even realise he had a limb missing at first, he was very agile. Deliah's 7 1/2 but from what I've seen so far I'm optimistic she's going to cope ok.  I just want my little Cocker shadow back - I've missed her checking up on me all the time.

No experience of tri legged cockers , but a friend has a tri legged greyhound and you should see him run!!!

Wishing you and Delilah good luck for tomorrow. I am sure she will come through the op ok and gradually adjust well.  Lots of positive wishes :bigarmhug: and a  :-* for Delilah.

I'm sure that you are doing the right, loving, thing. I saw a little dog just last week bombing around for all it was worth on three legs. Will be thinking of you

Thinking of you and your little girl. Hope all goes well tomorrow. No experience of having a 3-legged cocker, but my boy, Ollie, remained very agile despite having a broken leg with cast on a couple of years ago. I had a problem keeping him still! Am sure Delilah will adapt fine and will be so much happier without the pain.  All the best through this difficult time.

Hi,
My sister had a terrier cross about 10 years ago who only had three legs, she was a resucue/cruelty case so we never knew how she has lost her (front) leg. She came to my sister having only just had had the operation and she was a whirlwind!! It didn't slow her down in anyway, including the time she got the scent of something across the fields and my sister had to chase her and almost rugby tackle her to stop  :005: I'm sure you're little one will also manage just fine too.
It must be such a worrying time for you and such hard decisions to have to make, so much love and best wishes to you both for tomorrow and the next few weeks.

I'm so glad it didn't come back as definitely being an osetosarcoma. You're definitely making the right choice for your girl, this way you're minimising the risk of any spread if it is actually malignant, as well as alleviating her pain. Still, not an easy choice to make:(  Although I haven't had any personal experience, I've heard they take a little longer to adapt to the loss of a front limb, as they carry more weight than the hindlimbs, but once they've worked it out they do just fine:) Will be thinking of you and Delilah tomorrow and keeping fingers crossed that all goes smoothly:)

No experience personally but have seen a number of dogs coping really well on three legs, thats a mix of front and back amputations.  Will be thinking of you tomorrow and sending lots of healing positive vibes for lovely Delilah  :bigarmhug:

Hiya my collie x had her front left whole leg and shoulder removed due to a tumor in her bone  :'( she did well and started to recover she seemed to understand that she couldn't do what she used to any more she was about 14/15 thought and was coming to the end anyway. Unfortunatly about a month later she had to be pts  :'( she had an infection and other malignant tumours had been found and it wasn't fair to keep chopping bits off. I hope every thing goes well for you and delilah I'm sure she'll be fine. She's young buy some small children's t shirts so she can't get to her stitches instead of a cone as she may loose her balance at first. Of and a stair gate if you can to stop her trying the stairs at first.
