Incontinence issues - are there any cures/treatments?
« on: April 15, 2012, 01:38:48 PM »
As some of you know, Odie has started taking 2 lots of meds after being diagnosed with Addison's.  He was on a drip for 2 days at the vets as he was dedydrated and ever since Friday when we collected him, he was been needing a wee every 5-10 mins (very long wees every time).

Now I realise that his system is still adjusting to the meds etc, but I'm thinking long term. I needed to leave him yesterday for 1 hour - he done 3 massive wees in the kitchen, even though he was out before we left him.

I can't leave him to get on with simple chores as I'm finding wees wherever we are :-\  As you can imagine, my carpets are going to be in an awful state - they're new and cream as we're selling our house :-\

My question is, what IF it doesn't get any better?  I need to leave him daily for school runs and in general for shops/family things etc.  He has the run of the downstairs currently.  I suppose I can keep him in the kitchen but is there anything I can use or ask the vet for to strengthen his bladder again?  Thanks.
Both taken away from us far too soon. x  RIP Angels Odie & Archie, causing mayhem at the Rainbow, no doubt!

Ooh he seems far worse than Keli was poor man  :'(

My suggestions are leave him confined to the kitchen and speak to your vet. The mes may need adjusting but you may find they need to be in his system a bit longer for them to week things. Are you going back later this week? See if you can manage til then. Poor Odie can't help it so to avoid raised tempers I would stick to the confined to kitchen plan for now :bigarmhug:

My friend's dalmation had a problem after she was speyed and used to wee without realising.
She is on medication for the rest of her life - but it DOES work and she no longer wees all the time.
Good luck and I really hope it is just a short term issue.

Thanks.  He's back at the vets tomorrow so will ask then.  I'm not getting mad at him, I just can't do anything or go anywhere in the house without him "asking" for the toilet constantly.

It is useful to know that there are meds out there if his problem continues.  Fingers crossed it's just a case of him adjusting.

Oh bless him.... and you hun  :bigarmhug:  Everything crossed here that its just a case of balancing out his meds for his urine output to get more under controllable, for now I would just keep him in the kitchen when you have to leave him, hard as that may be, you need to keep it manageable for you too  :luv:
Hope the vets can help tomorrow  :luv:

It's a really difficult situation and I really do feel for you :( I'm not familiar with the side effects of florinef but what the pred is causing is something known as Polyuria and Polydipsia which is really just peeing a lot and drinking a lot so I don't think he's really incontinent but rather he's actually producing a lot of urine. Did the vet mention anything about reducing his pred dose in the future or is that going to be his maintenance dose? I would speak to the vet and tell them that Odie's having problems with the side effects and ask if they have any options to reduce them for you. Coops peeing definitely did settle down after a few weeks though so fingers crossed that Odie's will too.

Hugs to you and your boy:)

Thanks.  I realise it's not strictly incontinence - when he's asleep overnight, he can manage a good few hours (I was up at 3.30am, previous wee was 11pm).

I've looked up the side effects of Florinef and it's excessive drinking and weeing so combine this with the Pred side effects its no wonder he spends his time in the garden!

I assume the vet can adjust dose accordingly, will have a chat with her.   :D

Poor boy, he's got a double whammy with both drugs then:( Hope they can work something out for him as it must be really difficult for both you and him to cope with. Coop sends cocker wags to you both :)

If you remember when Tali had the meds for his eye that made him  salivate wildly and I could not get him house trained with weeing?

That medicine stimulated all the glands including the adrenal gland which I believe is what Florinef does. I'm sure they can tweek the dose. See what she says tomorrow :bigarmhug:

Yes Mel, I remember poor Tali's problems :'(  It's just difficult to manage it when I've got the house spick and span for viewings ph34r  You don't want to know about my poor grass - he's been twice for a poo - well, I should say about 30 pieces of dripping ph34r :020: everywhere (as he travels as he poos ph34r).

Hi there
My Bertie has Cushings disease which I think is similar to Addisons, certainly the symptoms sound the same - he could wee for England !! He is on Vetoryl and it took about 6 months to get the dosage right , but now he can go all night without one of us having to get up to let him into the garden. We did use the newspaper / puppy pads which at least meant we didn't have to put our wellies on before going into the kitchen  :005:
Hang in there, hopefully things will improve

Thanks for that.  He's currently back in the vets for the weekend for monitoring.  I think it's going to take a while to get his meds just right so will just have to try and manage the excess weeing as best I can!

I am really feeling for you at the moment Lesley! You are being so patient and if I was a dog I'd want you looking after me.  Hope the monitoring helps the situation. Hugs to you and Odie. xxxx
