Fussy about water
« on: April 22, 2012, 09:52:08 PM »
We've been away for the weekend to Saffron walden, Essex, and both spaniels refused to drink the tap water, preferring to find odd dishes of fresh rainwater. They are used to soft  Yorkshire water, straight from rain to reservoir to tap, few chemicals.   I remember that sheffield's David  Blunkett MP had the same problem with one of his  guide dogs when at Parliament, and had to get her bottled water.
When we got home this evening they both drank to their hearts delight.
Anyone else notice the difference when away?
RIP Marti  the EPI springer age 12,  and beloved black cocker Bobby, 8 yrs old, too soon, from PLN.
Now owned by TInker, tiny hairy grey poodle/terrier rescue from Greece and Jack, local rescue,   scruffy ginger terrier mutt.

We have very hard water where we live, and Monty definitely seems to prefer rainwater to his lowly bowl of tap water. Although he drinks from his bowl his preference is rainwater, preferably from some wholly unsuitable looking puddle!

We have hard water here too, although I do filter it as Emma is prone to urine crystals, but on holidays they do notice the difference and are not keen on the change  :shades: Their bestest favourite is a nice muddy puddle. Yuk!

Bailey is the same! He goes to daycare and won't drink from the bowl if another dog has! Kind of difficult when there's 5 other dogs there!
He always comes in and has a masssive drink! he also looks at you in disgust if you come back from a walk and forget to give him fresh water!  :005:

Not sure if this is quite the same, but Indie is currently drinking water from the puddles on the patio!

When Louis arrived on the scene William wouldn't drink from the water bowl if Louis had got there first, to the point where I was so worried that William might get dehydrated I was cleaning the water bowl out about 6 times a day and putting the clean bowl down in front of William each time before Louis could get to it.

Even now I see William wrinkle his nose up at the water bowl if slobberchops Louis has dribbled in it, but he happily drinks from puddles in the New Forest.

My late FIL's greyhound was partial to a bit of toilet water if the lid wasn't left down. ph34r

Sir Charlie prefers milk...after a long walk he'd happily pass on water. So now I have to take milk with me to ensure that he at least has a drink. I always take water as well just in case Sir fusspot decides he wants that.

My beautiful little boy Charlie :)

:005: He has you very well trained.

My two like the tap water here but also like to drink rainwater from the planter in the yard so we have never managed to put plants in it.  They now use it as a water trough, though we do empty it out regularly as worry about them drinking stagnant water.  On walks they never seem keen to have any water we have taken with us, whether bottled or tap water brought in a flask.  Perhaps they are also holding out for milk!

We go away in our caravan and always filter the water, but sometimes the girls just don't seem to like it  :-\

At home we use reverse osmosis water, woe betide me if I'm in a hurry and top the bowl up with normal tap water! ph34r
