Newbie - 1 yr old working cocker swollen glands...
« on: July 14, 2012, 12:39:00 AM »
Hello all

New poster here looking for some advice/guidance - sorry it is a bit long and I appreciate a wee bit rude having not even been introduced :D

Bridie is coming up 1, working cocker who we took to the Vet yesterday's with a sticky/itchy eye thing.  Good as far as that goes but she was there around a month ago to have her anal glands squeezed and I commented that she had what appeared to be a swollen gland , one side under her ear. Advised just to keep am eye on it. Since then she has developed a matching 'lump' on the other side so I mentioned this.

Vet had a bit of a poke around and commented that actually all her glands were palpable and shouldn't really be for a dog of her age and size.  And she has lost around 1kg too.  Vet was a locum and we have an appointment to go back Wednesday to see usual vet. Who undertook the original exam so maybe able to comment on any progression.

She has however been really subdued today - had a decent run about with the kids this morning, maybe 3 hours out the house on a usual walk but with a cafe visit, sitting on lead at park etc.  she actually fell asleep in the Cafe - cf. to a walk up a Munro 3 weeks ago.

Eating fine but has lost a bit of weight.  Drinking loads.

So (1) does she need to go back to the vets before Wednesday; and (2) any ideas what could be wrong?

Thanks.

Hello and welcome.

I dont know what could be wrong but I am sure someone will be along shortly that might have had some experience of this. If you are walking her further than usual this might have contributed to the weight loss!! If it were me I would just pop her along to the vet sooner rather than later for peace of mind.

Would you say she is drinking more than usual, did the vet give any meds for the glands?

Hi there :)

If all her lymph nodes are enlarged (there are loads of causes of this) and she is looking sick in herself then, as Maddy said, I'd definitely take her back to the vet for another exam. Did she have a fever? Did the vet do a blood smear?

I really hope she feels better soon and the vet can get to the bottom of all of it :)

I hope they can help, I'd imagine they may run some bloods on her to see if that identifies a cause.

Good luck.

Thanks guys.

Nothing done proactively re: swollen glands. I guess you are right Vet will probably run some bloods.  I'll see how she goes this morning after a good walk and take it from there.

Cheers
