Need some help please.
« on: August 10, 2012, 11:04:12 PM »
Tali has been at his new home for just on a month now. Unfortunately I am starting to see some behaviours emerging and am at my wits end as he is acting like a deaf teenager.

Maybe I should just list them to make it easier.

1) When OH and I sit down to watch TV he exhibits pacing and panting and barking at what can sometimes be nothing.

2) Barks at postman and will attempt to rip up post.

3) Started barking and whining excitedly when it rains.

4) Is completely obsessed with the squirrel and just stands by the tree or runs back and forth between the bird table and tree. Doesn't interact and won't come when called.

5) Still has separation anxiety even though we are working on it and sometimes is very good while we leave and other times we come back to big messes!

He is becoming a 24hr job and I looked on the apdt site for a local behaviourist who may give me some extra tools, but I didn't like the reply saying he's trying to control everything and what colour cocker is he and pack dog theory. >:D

I have come up to bed early so angry and fed up because I don't want to see Tali distressed.

I know alot of theory but feel I can't see the wood for the trees.

Can anyone give me some practical things to try? Btw even if he's pacing, barking etc. He'll stop for food and treats but not if he's asked to settle or be quiet both commands he was taught from a young pup.

Thanks

Am I just over concerned over nothing.g? Is this just a phase as it seems from reading on here and other reputable websites that often dogs go through an almost second adolescence at this age? Just I guess, more concerned as I realise this move could have worried him as we cannot explain what is going on. When we had the fridge replaced the other day he paced around in a panic like he felt we were moving again and he wasn't happy.

Hi Mel....afraid I can't offer any individual advise on these hun, but what I will say is I think its probably been brought on by all the change you've all been through since Christmas really... I would go back to basics with him on pretty much everything, just to settle him back down.  You've been so stressed as well, he'll have picked up on that... suspect its all had a bit of a cumulative effect on him, hence the behaviour... add to that the whole new environment he's had to get used to, free access to garden etc...
He sounds like he's kinda living on high alert...and needs how to learn to relax in the new environment etc....

That's exactly it Lisa, living on high alert.

We have started to walk him round the garden on a lead to praise when he does his business as a couple of times we have had accidents as he has been out obsessing over the squirrel, eventually come in and just wet on the mat.

I know he could have been far worse but want to nip this before it gets beyond reversal.

Thanks x

Are there any Tellington touch therapists near you? I went on a half day course to learn the basics, and it has amazing calming effects yet is very simple to do. There is a good book by the lady who 'invented' it. I think it is called 'Getting in touch with your dog' by Linda Tellington Jones.

Hi Mel,

As Lisa said, it sounds like Tali is constantly on high alert and is unable to relax. It's a bit of a vicious circle (I know because I've been through it in some situations with Louis) and it will continue to feed on itself until you can find the key to help him relax. I'm sure it's all down to the changes that have happened this year.

I think a good behaviourist could really help. I'll PM you about a London based one that I've met at a couple of seminars who I think has a real understanding of stress in dogs.

Going on to a couple of the specifics you mentioned -

Squirrels - William is totally obsessed and I won't walk him in woods where I know he'll see squirrels because he just loses his mind and has to run, run, run until he's exhausted. It's like I don't exist and he neither sees or hears me. We used to have the same problem in the garden. William would be on high alert in the house, watching the bird feeders, then running outside to bark and chase. I almost gave up feeding birds then discovered this http://shopping.rspb.org.uk/squirrel-buster-plus-feeder.html which cost an arm and a leg but I've had it for several years now and it's more than paid it's way. It really is squirrel proof and after a few tries at it they give up in frustration and don't come near it. I still see plenty of squirrels in the woods at the end of the garden and on my neighbour's bird feeders but not in my garden. It's one of the best things I've ever bought and stops William from stressing about squirrels.

Pacing etc. when you're watching TV - Is this just in the evening? Louis seems to think that early to mid evening is playtime and is restless after he's been fed if I sit down to watch TV. He paces up and down and constantly watches me, although not every evening thank goodness. I try to pre-empt the behaviour by having a short play session with him and/or giving him something to chew that he doesn't have access to the rest of the time.

Have you heard of Karen Overall's Relaxation Protocol? I printed it off the internet a while ago after somebody recommended it for Louis, but haven't got stuck into it yet. It looks a bit daunting because there's pages of it but it's actually just a series of simple exercises to go through with your dog to help him learn to relax.

I think the key to all of Tali's behaviours that you've mentioned is relaxation and if you can get him to learn how to relax he'll be much happier and a lot easier to live with. Sending you some hugs  :bigarmhug: :bigarmhug: and hoping that you can help Tali to settle and love his new surroundings very soon :luv:

Thanks Ruby Tuesday that's a great suggestion. I have the books and went to a could of Claire's  TTouch sessions but he's actually not sticking around long enough to use it on him.

I have ordered the book Elaine ;-) I had meant to buy that but what with moving I forgot during this move. We are both committed to get him through this and if we are not progressing via the book, OH has said we must get the best help we can ;-) so will contact her.

Just a bit of support has helped me see things a bit clearer. Thanks COLer's  :luv:

Lots of lovely advice  :luv:
We moved house just before xmas, and it took a month or so for two dogs to settle down. However, Issac my Vizsla took alot longer, probably only returning to 'normal' in the last month or so. He became very 'adolescent' , not great for a nine year old  :shades:   :005: when we went out he would go around the house opening all the internal doors. It took us a week or so to work out why when they had been shut away in the utility room, we came home to find them in the longe/ kitchen and my work room ( i make soft furnishing so that room is dog free) barking at the world  :P ph34r  :005:
Time and consistency has done the trick, and we now return home and find the dogs where we left them  :D
So I guess my input is, it will take time  :D

Just a quick update. I got a book Elaine suggested and contacted the respected behaviourist and am awaiting a reply. I know this is down to scary new things for Tali but I just need someone to show me some practical steps to stop the barking.

Will keep you updated on progress. Thanks Elaine :bigarmhug:

I find my worker Harvey can become 'highly strung' at times, and you are right - its exhausting trying to deal with him. What I have found is that if I up his exercise to the point where he's worn out, it settles him down. Also when I leave him I scatter a few bits of meat/doggy treats around and don't let him touch them until I'm walking out the front door. He now wags his tail when I'm going out instead of crying  :D

My friends daughter is a behaviourist and told me to use "adaptil collar and diffuser" it maybe a coincidence but it seems to have worked a treat.
