Fat Face and a lesson learned
« on: August 20, 2012, 07:51:02 AM »
Woke up to Ellie scratting and
digging in the carpet on Saturday
bout 4.30am , went to loo whenI
came back and looked at her all
her face was swollen(think cabbage
patch doll) yikes not at home so had
dash to garage 30 miles no piriton had to wait
till 9 to get some anyhoo after about an hour
her face had gone down a bit...

However in the afternoon she was being sick
so I couldn't give her another... woke me 4am
Sunday being sick  again . So I'm thinking
Vet so load car up and dash back to
Yorkshire and organised to go our Vet
at 10am as she now had swollen sclera
of her left eye too.
So Vet checked eye for damage=ok no probs
gave her anti-histamine injection and steroid
injection and she's fine now....
what is the lesson learned?....
Keep some Piriton with you at all times ;)

Poor Ellie. Hope she is soon all better. And isn't she lucky to have a mummy who put her first and did everything possible to get her sorted :)
Just out of interest, how much piriton would you give?

Poor baby, glad she's all sorted now. Do you know what caused it?

I think it may have been an
insect bite or sting, plenty of
creepy crawlies in the countryside!

oh and i gave her 1x 4mg tab,
the Vet said that's fine as you can't
really overdo it :D

Sounds like a sting to me. Narrowly avoided one ourselves, yesterday.

Wasn't there something about drowsy vs non-drowsy Piriton? Also, I think you can overdose a dog on it it it's quite a margin for error and at least it'll sort the initial problem and you'll know what the secondary symptoms were caused by.

know how you feel with that one, Jethro got stung in the night (something few though vent in kitchen). He was a very sorry state, the antihistamine injection sorted it. glad shes sorted.

hope Ellie is back to normal?

I believe human piriton isn't licensed for animals - Vet practice happily provided a dozen when asked but made it clear to only give one tablet in 24 hours; they only gave the large number as I explained we were going on a COL meet and I wanted to put together a first aid kit for dogs

Interestingly, I had to sign a disclaimer to say I wouldn't take the animal grade piriton myself........
