Gundog training and competitive agility?
« on: October 02, 2012, 10:33:22 AM »
Has anyone on here trained their workers in both disciplines? I would like to do both with my future worker as I already do agility with my dogs, but believe a worker will best benefit having the extra drive channeled into what it's bred to do (even if it doesn't necessarily include being shot over).  I know of some collies that compete successfully in agility as well as sheepdog trials so similar should be possible with a cocker?

I have done a bit of funding training but never worked mine.   However I know some agility competitors whose dogs also work.  I know at least one whose dog works and is grade 6 agility

My cocker works, beating and wildfowling. I've took him to an agility class for the last two years, I don't compete at agility though. I don't do it for the speed I do it because I know my cocker would hunt all day, but I also wanted a way to keep his focus, have him listen to me, take direction and still have fun, he tends to comply in a switched off way if he gets bored with repeated tradional training. The key thing to me was to find a class where manners matterred, no disrespect to anyone who competes but I've seen some dogs wound up to such a frenzie and that wasn't what I wanted. The class I took him to is run by one of the girls who works for Philippa Williams so they fully understand gundogs. He's expected to sit quietly between his turns, and if you think about it a lot of the commands help the gundog work i.e. stop when I ask you, 'get over' an obstacle, balance, take direction etc. He loves it and it's an add on to the other training we do.

Thanks Black taz and milly. I don't believe that good agility dogs need to be wound up into a frenzy either. It's about drive and control (IMO).  Which I suppose applies to the gundog training?  My worry would be confusing the dog training two different disciplines. I think it's going to be a challenge for me as I know nothing about gundog training so it'll be pup and me learning together. Hopefully foundation training for agility (basic commands like 'wait', left, right, etc) wouldn't confuse a dog when learning gundog commands?
