dental surgery

hi all my old girl age 14 is having to go in for dental surgery tomorrow .  im so worried, she has kidney disease but is doing well for her age, she is deaf and her eyesight isnt great but she still enjoys a walk and play.  ive been putting the surgery off coz its a worry having her put under, im scared she wont wake.    i know her teeth need seeing to and the longer i leave it the worse it will get.  could anyone give me any tips for after surgery and what to expect, i know she will be sleepy.  any advice, thanks

Hi, sorry I can?t really give any concrete advice, but I?m sure your vet will. I think the main thing is to keep a close eye on her  but let her have the peace and quiet she needs while she?s recovering. You?re naturally concerned but no doubt she?ll be well monitored during the op and the vet will have weighed up the risks.

My late boy had teeth removed aged 13 years, the vet combined it with another surgery he was having at the time.  The vet felt the bad teeth and bad breath would be contributing to bacteria in his system.

He was certainly groggy and I was given antibotics.  All went well so am sure your girl will be fine, the vet will have taken everything into to account before suggesting the surgery.

so maisie amazed me, she went in for surgery at 11.00 and was ready to collect by 3.00.  she was a little drowsy but steady on her legs.  she had one tooth out and has sutures.  she ate a little last night and slept well.  ive got to give her 1/2 a pardale v tablet twice a day.  she ate well this morning but hasnt had a no 2 yet.  letting her chill today.  wish i had got her dental done sooner its surprising how tough our senior spaniels are.

Yes, they are very resilient, they seem to just take it all in their stride, my Humphrey always amazes me, no matter what the vet?s done to him in the past he still goes in with his take wagging!
Don?t worry about her not needing to poo, her routine?s been upset, I?m sure she?ll be back to normal before long.
