PAH nutritionist

I went for a consultation yesterday at PAH and I knew more than she did. I am getting a cocker spaniel pup in 4 weeks and he is currently on Pro Plan and because it is not a dog food i am familiar with I was going for some advice. I also have an older dog who is on JWB mixed with 1/2 tin of chappie as she is prone to bouts of colitis. I wanted to see it was to see if I could transition the pup over to JWB , and economically which works out cheapest per meal and which was the better out of the two foods pro plan or JWB. To my astonishment she never recommended the PAH advanced nutrition she recommended Wagg because it is one of their best selling dog foods and also cheaper than the other brands needless to say i said no thank you and walked away.

Oh my doG - thats really shocking! If she is supposed to be a nutritionist, why is she recommending things based on price and popularity, rather than for the health of the dog?

I know times are hard and yes wagg maybe cheaper but the difference when i break it down into daily feeds is about 5p because she needs 2 1/2 times more wagg than JWB because a 15 kg bag of JWB lasts me almost 3 months were as a 12 kg bag of wagg sensitive would only last 33 days. I think PAH should employ me. I also mean no disrespect for people who feed their dog wagg ,because i fed my last dog bakers complete but then i realised it was a false economy

When we got Ebony, she was fed Pro plan Puppy. I bought 2x14kg bags as they were on offer and that lasted her until she was 12 months and then I started her on JWB which Rosie was on. Packet says to feed to 12months.

I am going to keep him on the Pro Plan would it matter which flavour or would i have to change him over gradually because i like to have a bit of variety in a dogs diet and pro plan do chicken , lamb and salmon

AND they have the cheek to advertise on TV to take your dog in for a weight check and nutrition consultation.What about naive people who dont know much about brands !!! will they just go along with what these PAH `nutritionists` tell them 
We went to PAH for Nature Instinct food and there was none on the shelf, when OH asked he was told there was, IT was for SENIOR dogs, when he said his dog was not a Senior (19months) the assistant just looked at him blankly.........Hm! makes you wonder!!!!
Rant over....as you`ll have gathered its not my favourite shop. Well not since I saw an assistant giving the sales speech speel to a customer re SHOCK COLLARS

PAH are shocking i was telling my vet on Friday about the advice the so called nutritionist gave me and he was shocked. He also said like you did about people who were naive about dog food would just take their word as law because as far as he is concerned, yes a dog can live on that brand of food but wont get the nutrition needed. As for shock collars don't get me started those things should be banned, my dog barks when someone is at the door but i just let her see who it is and she stops.

totally agree!

If you really think about it, why would a nutritionist want to work in PAH anyway  perhaps if it was an opportunity to provide decent advice to the general public for free, but it's PAH, a large chain who have targets to make and deals with suppliers.

I am not going on what one person experienced but on what I have also experienced.  How can a serious nutrionist possibly advise people to use the brands of poor quality food that they sell? They cannot just point everyone in the direction of one or two decent brands because that would be poor sales practice.

The girl i spoke to had never heard of brands like Arden Grange or Burns which did shock me because these are big brands and a bag of Arden Grange was yards in front of her. In future i will trust my own instincts were my old baby and soon to be new baby are concerned. So they are both sticking to their own foods JWB with a 1/2 tin of chappie and Pro Plan and i might consider changing then both to the same food when the little fella is old enough

In complete contrast to this, I went to Pets Corner (part of Wyevales) last week and asked for advice about getting Purdey to lose some weight, and the amount of information they knew about their products astounded me!

They explained that the reason that Luna seems to prefer Purdeys food (Bakers) is because it is full of sugar and fat and therefore tastes better but is bad for them.

I asked if JWB was a better bet, and she said it was better, but not as good as it used to be because they have reduced the % of protein in their products.
She pointed out 3 brands (Arden Grange, Symply and another I cant remember) that she said all had the best quality of ingredients - - She was even able to tell me where the meat was sourced from etc. I was so impressed, I'll be doing all my shopping there from now on.
