What does your cocker do while on a walk..........
« on: September 14, 2012, 05:12:16 PM »
(This is probably more for show types than working)

On a walk, does your cocker zoom ahead like a rocket, or lag behind at snails pace?

Our lunch time walk today was only a mile, but it took over two hours, simply because Toby spends all his time sniffing.   :005:  I swear if I didn't hurry him along, we would be out longer than that.   :o

If there's nothing to grab his attention, he just toddles along, about 50 yards behind me all the time.  I have to keep stopping to see what he's up to and it would be so much easier if he was ahead of me.

Anyone else have a slowcoach cocker?

  • To understand a cocker, you need to be a cocker!

When off lead in the field Maddi (show) belts about like a mad thing.

Part of me thinks she is just copying her daft brother (worker)

Millie is mostly on lead or she would be miles and miles away trying to kill things  ph34r ph34r :005:

Charlie is usually hidden in the bushes staring intently at a mouse hole  :lol2:

Pippa (show cocker) zooms around.  Runs ahead, realises we are out of sight, zooms back, runs off again, zooms back, snatches a treat, zooms off again.

Barney (Fauve) plods along behind us very, very slowly, sniffing every blade of grass for ten seconds.  When called he wil start a slow amble towards us, then get distracted by yet another clump of grass to explore and stop for another sniff.  Pippa sometimes gets annoyed with his slow progress and goes back to chivvy him along.  Unfortunately, he takes no more notice of her than he does of us though.

Maisy is a slow coach and has to sniff everything, it takes us ages to get anywhere! Lottie just run back and forth between me and Maisy, but will occasionally have her head down sniffing.

If she is on her lead she usually walks a bit in front of me, sniffing everything - or if she is in one of her moods, she is walking very slowly behind me looking fed up :005:. Offlead she is quite active, she doesn't tend to stray far but does enjoy a good run around. She is incredibly lazy though, and prefers short walks if we are at home.

I would be rushing Bailey to the vet if he wasn't running around like a mad thing. He calms down when we get home... not a moment a moment sooner.  >:(

Mine are both show types.

8 year old William is full of confidence and energy and loves to run if we're out in the open. He'll run ahead of me and then come zooming back just for the fun of it. But he's also a rabbit and squirrel chaser. He knows all the local rabbit warrens and spends time with his nose down rabbit holes, especially in spring and early summer (baby bunny smell I expect). Woodland walks can be a nightmare once he's seen a squirrel. He just focusses on them and forgets everything else for a while.

3 year old Louis is much more cautious. He occasionally follows William but never goes as far and likes to keep me in sight. He isn't really interested in rabbits or squirrels, which seems odd for a dog with a track record of eating live birds in the garden.

William loves the New Forest whereas Louis would be just as happy on a patch of grass in a park chasing a tennis ball.

Off lead Riley just runs sniffing constantly, will look up every now and then to check where Im at, then coming running nearer to me.
On lead he will either walk beside me with his head in the air, OR pull in front like a steam train sniffing everything.

When off the lead, Penny thinks she's a worker and charges around chasing and sniffing, tail going non stop, mostly after birds. However, she does a lot of sniffing, and if she's on the lead she can sniff for Scotland! She never trails behind, but will come running if she gets left behind. In the house, she's quite chilled, except when she and Jonny have one of their 'fights' - the Biting Game, or Can't Catch Me.

Meg just sort of mooches close to us, sometimes a bit in front, sometimes a bit behind just sniffing and checking where Alfie is :005:... although if we are on a n open field or the beach she chases Alfie barking! Quite embarrassing really

Alfie just runs around, in and out of bushes picking up random sticks/twigs, runnig with them for a bit then drops them and starts again. He is constantly checking for us though and always has to know where we are. I was really mean the other week and hid behind a tree... he was going crazy looking for me and since then he keeps even more of an eye on us! He also makes a bee-line for any water, he's a massive water baby

well, that explains a lot of things! Pearl alternates between running off like a loon, spending forever sniffing her way along or being pinned to my right ankle with her teeth :005:
