« on: January 27, 2007, 04:47:09 PM »
What can i do to stop my 17 week old puppy bonnie from pulling on the lead? without using a harness or a halter. She sometimes seems to do it just for the devilment of it and is worse with my wife who walks slower than me i am only taking her for about 20 to 25 minutes 3 times a day. i have started puppy training this week but haven't covered this .any suggestions would be appreciated

I find if I just stop when he pulls and dont start till the lead goes slack then he stops pulling as much, we are building up bit by bit and he is much better at walking to heal. I combined this with a treat held in front of him and when he walks properly he gets it (just make sure you have plenty with you)

She doesn't do it "for devilment" (although I know it feels like it), she does it because she is a puppy and hasn't been taught not too  ;)

There are various different methods of teaching a dog not to pull - and I am sure you will cover it in training classes, but not all methods work for all dogs  ::)
Don't give up too soon though - consistency is the most important thing; and each time Bonnie pulls she gets a reward (she gets where she wants to go), and so is more likely to do it again - it can take a while  ph34r

Be careful when walking a puppy, walking times need to be restricted whilst their bones are forming. The general rule is 5 mins per month of age per day. So a 4 mth old pup should be having no more than 20 mins walk a day  ;)

Twenty minutes three times a day though so 60 minutes in total spread out over three walks  ;)

I think Nicola was suggesting the hour is too much  and they shouldn't be getting 20minx 3 a day so Billy wasn't robbed ;)

No, it is 15 minutes three times per day at 3 months... 20 minutes three times a day at 4 months etc etc. That's what I've always had recommended and read in books and here on COL... cos if it was only 20 minutes in total per day that's only 6 minutes per walk and if you did it like that then a 6 month old puppy would only be getting half an hour's walk per day in three 10 minute bursts which is definitely not enough.

But that's what Billy got  ph34r I thought it was per day, not per walk. Oh dear poor Billy  :embarassed: :embarassed:  I'm sorry lad   :'(

Sometimes on the odd day we did go over this limit but not often  :'(

Awww I wouldn't worry too much about it now Jan hun  :-*  It won't have done him any harm in the long run although Alfie would have been a heck of a lot more hyper in the house!  :005:

I followed the same schedule as you did Jan, on the advice of my vet and posts at the time on CoL which said 5 minutes per month - nothing about three times a day  ph34r
Molo got loads of play and training in the garden, but only one or two walks - up to a daily total of 5 minutes per month  ;)

So you only took him out for a total of 15 minutes a day when he was 3 months? I wouldn't have been able to do any leash training with Alfie in a 5 minute walk, it would all have been used up with him going to the toilet and me picking it up!

No - I used to take him somewhere like a park, walk for five minutes - then he played with some dogs we met, then walked for another five minutes - then he played with another dog or two - or chased a ball, then we walked for another five minutes while we did some training and then more play before going home  ;)

Billy often only had one walk a day, the rest was in the garden or in the tennis courts.

I've read back old posts and very few of them actually state three times a day so I reckon there may be a few people that have made the same mistake  :005:
