My first forum/post after losing our little lady
« on: May 20, 2012, 07:47:34 PM »
Hi everyone, I am new to this forum but love it already. We lost our little lady last week to a birth defect of the C1 vertebrae. She damaged her spinal chord due to this whilst running one day, we tried every thing we possibly could including surgery but whilst recovering we had to rush her back to the vet where she had a fit and stopped breathing during the night. She was only 20 months but my god we miss her so much it hurts and haven't stopped crying since, so it is such a comfort to know that there are so many dog lovers about there and in particular Cocker Spaniel lovers (what a fantastic, loving and intelligent breed) Some of you may think it is a bit soon but we are so keen to get another one day in the not so distant future. Our lady was a blue roan but we are not sure if we could have the same colour again for fear of it reminding us of our precious Ellie (although I'm sure this will get easier!) We like the dual coloured type and my friend used to have a tan and white roan, are they hard to come by? is this possible to get a lighter roan? Forgive my ignorance but we have only ever had a Blue Roan and all breeders we have come across so far only have black or blue roans.

I look forward to lot's of dodgy related conversations anyway. Thanks for reading! Jenna

So sorry to hear of your loss, she must have left a very big hole in your lives.  I don't blame you at all for waiting to find another little one.  I can't help with the availability of colours, just wanted to say hello.  I have only had my golden cocker bitch Nerys for 18 months - she was given to me aged 12 months, as a failed gun dog, bless her - but have fallen in love with the breed.  Good luck in your search.

Hello and welcome to COL.

I'm really sorry to read about your little girl, such a young age to lose her.  You will know when it's time for your life to be shared again with a 4 legged friend :luv:  It's difficult not having a dog if you're used to one.

Good luck in your search, I hope you find a new furbaby soon, to help heal the hole in your heart :luv:
Both taken away from us far too soon. x  RIP Angels Odie & Archie, causing mayhem at the Rainbow, no doubt!

Thanks Geordietyke...yes me and my husband are only 26, she was our first doggy that we brought to our home together and expected to have her for a good few years whilst we had children and grew together (I have always had cockers as a child and my parents still have one)

Yes a huge hole! thanks for the hello, it is lovely to share this with you all. I have too fallen in love with the breed and with regards to colour I'm sure it won't matter once our grief has gone a little. Thank you so much.

So sorry to hear about your loss.  As the Mum of another wee blue roan girl who has had the same op, it saddens me that your little baby didn't make it.  Funny, I never thought about problems with getting the same colour dogs.  When I lost my light blue roan Chloe, I got another blue roan Kali.....and then another Lyla!  I know what you mean about things reminding you but we are at the stage where we love to see things the girls do that remind us of Chloe :luv:  I hope you find what you are looking for xxx

Wow really? same op? she had to have screws put in the top vertebrae as it was missing a piece and was very unstable. unfortunately she bust a screw so it trapped her spinal chord again and then bust the other screw during the night, it caused a fit and stopped her breathing!! thank you for your kind words xxxx

No, not that drastic Hun.  She burst a disc in her spine and then during recovery, burst another towards her tail.  The first paralysed both back legs, the second gave her more lameness in her right leg.  It was only when a little doggie (operated on just before her) died that I realised just how dangerous the op is.  I am truly sorry for your loss xx

So sorry to hear about the loss of your beloved little girl Ellie...you must be utterly heartbroken to lose her at such a young age.
You will know when the time is right for you to open your heart and home to another wonderful cocker furbaby and give another little one a loving home.
Positive thoughts for you and your husband at this sad time :bigarmhug: :bigarmhug:

Welcome to COL  :D

I am sorry for your loss  :bigarmhug:

I understand what you mean about not having a fur baby too similar to the special girlie you lost but having another cocker (when the time is right of course ;)) is a fitting tribute to a very special fur baby. :luv:

Hi Jenna
Firstly, great big  :bigarmhug: to you as I know the pain you are going through.  I can't really advise on colour but I would like to say I totally understand where you are coming from with getting another one the same colour as your little girl.  We lost an orange roan and although I love that colour, I just couldn't find it in my heart to get another orange for fear of being constantly reminded of the darling we lost.  So, we went for a black and adore him to pieces BUT, I still hanker for an orange - maybe one day, when Toby is older and calmer  :005:  You will know when the time is right for you to bring another one into your home.  For me, it took 8 months but we are all different.  I wish you the best of luck and I promise you will know that special pup as soon as you see it.  :luv:
