Wanting To Breed
« on: March 23, 2005, 07:28:38 PM »
Hi.
When my light black and white cocker bitch gets old enough i am going to breed from her. I already have her registered with Uk Register. But i have been looking around and i have noticed a new register with Iams/Eukanuba. Has anyone got a dog registered with this, or have registered with them. Or do you know of a registering campany. My cocker cant be reg with KC as her parents werent so KC want let me

Thankx linzie :)

This post will get moved as its posted in the wrong section but just wanted to say that if your bitch isn't KC registered then it is not advisable to breed from her. Health screening is extremely important when it comes to breeding any pedigree dog and cockers are no different - eye testing is v v important and the BVA scheme is only available to KC registered dogs.  If I were you, I would just enjoy her for the much loved pet that she is.

Hi,

She has had all her tests. And i dont see why i cant breed from her because she is not KC registered. She has a beaut of a temperment and looks, and is very healthy. She is not KC reg as of her parents are not, but i have tryed to reg her but they cant do it. I recon that every Bitch should have a chance of having her own litter. Do you know where i can get a pedigree forms from?

Fair enough   Have you tried the company you have her registered with? The Kennel Club also sell them.

Why do you want to breed from your girl?  There is no biological need for a bitch to have a litter. In fact the safest route is not to breed as there are so many risks associated with breeding. You should go into it with your eyes wide open. Although it is rare - it is not unknown for bitches to be lost through the breeding process and for the puppies to be lost too.

You will also need to ensure you have enough money to cope with potentially hefty vets fees and purchase all the correct equipment.

The fact your girl is not KC registered is a major concern. There is no other form of registration that carries any weight or assurance other than KC reg's. Any other is not worth the paper it's written on as there is no validation of the data.

If you are intent on going ahead then while you could have the tests done - they wouldn't be done to KC rules as your girl is not KC reg'd.

As for pedigree forms - I don't think you'll be able to use the KC ones for the reasons mentioned - but you can just as easily make your own.

Who do you intend to use as a stud dog? - no stud dog owner worth their salt would allow their boy to mate with an unregistered bitch.

I'm going to say something very harsh now - and that is if you want to be a reputable breeder then you should not breed from this bitch - no reputable breeder would.

If you are keen to enter the world of breeding then start to plan now by finding out all you can about what it means. Get yourself a copy of The Book of the Bitch then look to find a KC registered bitch from a good breeder who will help you through the process. Expect it to take you a number years before you have a litter. That way you are more likely to make a success of it and give your girl the best care and thought possible.

For now enjoy your current girl for the pet that she is.

Surely if she is not registered with the KC, then she cannot of had the BVA eye test -therefore you would be breeding in the dark so to speak  .

Edited to add...Maybe it would be a good idea to have a look here so you are aware of the health issues.

Yeah she have had all of her tests, with her eyes so on with the vet. And are all clear.

The stud is not with the kennel club its with the uk comapny that my floss is with.
I have enough money to look after all my dogs so there is no problem there whatever. if i didnt have enough money i wouldnt of had her in the first place, even so wouldnt of had a bitch.

Just noticed you've said the stud is a working cocker. Is your girl a working strain too rather than show type?
